Hi,2nd post ... wish it wasn't about this.

The truck...

2000 quad cab 4x4 5spd

edge comp w/ wire tapped

The story

Getting on the freeway with a 10k trailer, engine was under a pretty good load... I believe I ran out of fuel (another story) engine shut down before I made it off of the on ramp.

had 10 gallons of fuel brought out and got started bleeding the enjectors to get it running... tried to get it started for a long time. . untill the battery got too low... then tried more with a jump from tow truck...

15lbs of fuel pressure at the vp-44... checked codes from instrument cluster 0122,0460,1693

couldn't get it started and took the hook home. .

did some searching. .

found this post

https://www.turbodieselregister.com...0-troubleshooting-vp-44-quoted-blue-chip.html

which is leading me to believe it's the vp-44. . especially the part about running out of fuel under load and starting issues which I've been having lately

Just looking for anything that I've overlooked before I spend the money on a new pump.

Thanks for any help you have to offer and if you need more info let me know.

Aaron,

The DTC's you have don't point to the VP44 being bad and they could have been caused by the low battery. Do you have a code scanner to clear the codes and see if any come back?

Of course it's certainly possible that running out of fuel under a high throttle setting destroyed the VP44.

When you crank the engine with an injector line(s) loose, do you get a good squirt of fuel or just a dribble?

Have you opened up the fuel filter housing and checked to see if it's full of fuel? Replace the fuel filter and top it off before closing it up.

Something else you might want to try...

Remove the fuel line at the inlet to the VP44, place the open end of the fuel line into a coffee can or other large container, then bump the starter to activate the fuel transfer pump. This is to see if you're getting a good smooth flow of fuel into the container.

Where are you located? Maybe a fellow TDR member living nearby might have a Cummins VP44 tester.

Best regards,

John L.

I gave the codes because I thought that would be one of the first things someone would tell me to do..... no scanner, may run and get one... would the codes come back even though I can't get it to run ???

get nothing but a dribble out of one of the three injectors bled

topped it off before bleeding... didn't have a filter with me though

will try this over the weekend... it did have some fuxuation of pressure when I bumped the key... sometimes it would waiver between 10 and 15 lbs then back up to 15

located near San Luis Obispo,CA I will check the TDR list that I got with my mebership package and see

Thanks.....

thought I'd post a follow up to this in case someone finds it in a search...

The vp44 was bad. . I decided to change it due to symptoms and conditions explained in this thread. . mostly the info I found on bluechips site... . I also decided to do the fass because it was a good package deal and it was just time :D

while doing the job I also replaced the cam sensor and added the BD stealth pump cover

I purchased a reman vp44 and a fass from Midwest Fuel Injection

Dodge VP44 Bosch Injection Pump Cummins 5. 9L 24 Valve

and used DieselDans video series on youtube to do the install

YouTube - VP-44 Install and Removal Series 1 of 5

stealth cover (purchased on ebay)

BD Diesel Performance Stealth VP44 Pump Cover Kit - Dodge 1998-2002 24valve

cam sensor (NAPA)

NAPAONLINE®

took me the better part of the day to install the vp and fass

Thanks for the help
