in issue 61 pg. 24 "test the apps" "a bad vp44 ip can give some similar symptoms. the symptoms can be intermittent or constant. the VP44 test box can sometimes isolate the problem. it allows the engine to start, and to rev to 2000rpms without the ecm or apps being attached. " where can i get a vp44 test box? ive never heard of one before. my truck will not start but i guess it just depends on the day because it started the other day just like its supposed to. i shut it off and it wouldnt restart and it still wont restart. it has been doing this to me for the past 6 months.

It is a Cummins special tool that the Dodge dealers also got. The Cummins number on the front is 3163834. It does save a bunch of time to be sure you don't have any wiring or ecm issues.

You can buy one here:

Miller SPX - Cummins Fuel Injection Pump Tester

At $346, it's not cheap! Used ones sometime pop up on eBay.

For your starting problem, try swapping out the ASD relay with another non-essential relay (possibly the wiper or horn relay) located in the PDC (Power Distribution Center) which is located on the driver's fender under the hood.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try swapping out the relay labeled either "Fuel Pump" or "Fuel Injection" with a non-essential relay.

If either one of these solves the problem, replace the offending relay. They're common and can be found at any good auto parts store.

Also, have you checked for DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)?

Good luck,

John L.

TDeltonto,

You can use two jumpers wires to the VP to bypass all other electronics. This will allow the VP to start and run at idle, no acceleration. If the engine starts with the jumper wires it pretty much eliminates the VP as the culprit, meaning the problem is wiring or ECM. If no start, then the VP is bad.

Follow the directions in post #4 of this thread https://www.turbodieselregister.com...nsmission-1998-5-2002/74018-testing-vp44.html

Godspeed,

Trent

That is true... ... ... ... ... . but one slip and you will fry the vp controller,Not worth the gamble hence the black box

IF it is the APPS there is a thread about replacing it with one from a bus.

I do not have a DC apps. We took the electronic on / off switch (what fails) out of the APPS. I use a microswitch (1,000,000 cycle to failure) in place of the DC electronics (which are only an electronic on / off switch) and a potentiomenter from the bus. If you use the whole bus APPS the bus APPS does not have electronics but rather a circuit sweep for the on / off function.

The heat in the APPS area kills the DC electronics eventually. The other solutions are NOT electronic but rather mechanical on / off switches (duh!).

Just FYI

Well it has been another year running the tps with the microswitch. Zero problems, runs great, just towed this weekend with it and thought about how much thanks I owe the TDR 2nd gen guys for working out a significant problem by simplyfing the dumba** Dodge design.

The fuel systems still runs fine, indicates properly, bilge blower keeps the VP44 cool, fuel coolers keep the fuel cool.

Truck runs really really well, thanks again 2nd gen TDR (gary and a host other "experimenters")
