Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP Failure ?

A friend of mine was traveling to work and his engine shutoff. I have read and heard this before and I think usually always led to a VP replacement. This is a 2001 truck with no mods. He pulled the codes 1688 and 1689. Both referncing electrical on the VP. I told him to check the plug on the VP and crack the injectors on 1,3 and 5 and check for pressure. He says the lift pump runs and the fuel cannister is full. Any other suggestions before he contributes to the economy for a new VP ?

You are on the right track. Also, look for equal amounts of fuel from the loose lines. Any big variation could mean the shaft in the VP gave up.

just because you have fuel at the lines doesn't mean the vp is good, also because there is fuel in the canister doesn't mean there is good pressure, most likely its gonna be injection pump, check fuel pressure at the injection pump and go from there.

Try jumping the VP. Use the correct connections from post #4 of the following thread.

Thanks for the test link, funny I was just thinking of that post. Thanks to all for the suggestions, I forwarded the links and responses to him. I will let you know what I find out from this fiasco. If nothing else at least I am getting on the job training with his pump. He also needs to sign up as this place is going to save him a lot of money if he replaces the pump himself.

Talked to this guy Friday morning and all is well after pump change. I asked if he noticed any difference with the new pump and he said no. I was just curious to see if the new pump showed any seat of the pants or mpg difference. This truck has no added mods including gauges. I gave him genos link and tried to impress how important some of those things are. It is up to him now.
