You know they're out there. Cranked out on caffiene, calipers, micrometers, pocket protectors...



Or just a twelve-pack, a ruler, some holy sacred Bosch notes, and a #2 soaked floor...



They're out there, twiddling, tweaking, figgering, fumbling, spewing diesel all over...



They're out there, but they ain't a gonna come posting around here. :rolleyes:



I tried to get some info on the finer points of 7100 tweaking on here a while back. Got the same stone wall.

I have my old 'VP44' pump that I took out of my 2000 Turbo24v Ram at 60K miles and replaced with a new one from Cummins- Stuff in Texas. I will get $250 back if I return it to John at the above Company, but I am willing to give it to you for the better good of my fellow TDR members if you would pay the shipping.

The symptoms I replaced it for were hard starting when the engine was warm. Otherwise, it worked great! I was running an 'Edge Comp' at the time.

Let me know as it's boxed and ready to ship right now. I'm willing to sacrafice the $250 for information from you that will help my new VP44 to last.

I'm afraid to hook up the Comp 'Wire' on my new pump so I'm running it only as an 'EZ. '

I have studied the innards of the VP quite a bit recently... and to be honest... it ain't all that complicated! :D



Rob: First I would like to commend you for your generousity. I would gladly pay the shipping on your VP-44. But I would ask if you could hold out until Mark gets back to me. I think Steve's old pump is in rougher shape and I don't think he has any 'core' charge money hanging over his head.



In other words - I'd rather see you either keep your pump (as a spare... ), or get $250 back instead of me sacrificing it. However, if I cannot find another pump and you are still willing to make me the same offer - I will accept it graciously.



The ISB and VW crowds will hopefully benefit from any research that I conduct. The similarities between the pumps from both the VW's and the ISB's over the years far outweigh the differences.

OK, I'll step out and ask the stupid question - fits the rest of my personality - WHAT exactly is the function/purpose of the DV to BEGIN with? Why does Bosche include it in the design - is it like our appendix - sort of an "optional" organ we can easily do without?



OR, is this discussion mostly for the power mad competition types, and not of likely benefit for daily drivers?:confused: :confused:
 
Most of my (diesel high performance) experience is with the P-Pump.



The delivery valve in those pumps acts as a one-way backflow prevention valve as well as what I would consider to be a poppet valve. It is designed to crack at a certain pressure as the pluger pumps fuel towards it and it is also in there to keep any remaining fuel in the 'slug' from coming back into the pump via the injection lines.



The part of the delivery valve that folks like to modify does not affect the valves ability to be a backflow prevention device. All we are doing when we grind the delivery valves is making the valve less of a restriction as the slug passes through..... that's where you get more fuel.



If the delivery valves inside the VE/VP pumps operate under the same principle as the P-7100, (which is the assumption I have made from the research I have done so far... ) then the end result will be the same:



More power/better response.



It is up to the end user/installer to make sure that their truck has the proper tuning (timing, boost, etc. ) to burn all the extra fuel.



Thanks to Mark and Steve - I will soon have a VP-44 to play with... at which point I can begin incorporating my research into the VP-37 that's inside my VW TDI. I can then give my results to the VP-44/37 crowd and people can start playing with their pumps.



The thing to keep in mind is that the mixture of high pressure, tight tolerances, and expensive pumps/electronics can make for some expensive mistakes... . and great results, if you're careful.



I have already played with the VP-37 in the VW - both electronically and mechanically... . and the results have been astounding. I don't have any dyno numbers... . but it sure pulls good for a little 1. 9L diesel.

I have the pump (failed VP-44)... . and will be taking apart the necessary bits inside of it ASAP.

Ever try to take delivery valve holders out of a pump when it ain't bolted to the gearcase?!



Man, you forget how tight those suckers are when the pump isn't bolted to something. I'm going to have to get a vice or something... I couldn't budge the DV holders worth a fat rat's behind... .



It's hard working on injection pumps on your kitchen table! :-laf
