We have a Ford F650 service truck here at work. The truck has a service body and a crane on the back and is used to work on heavy equipment in the field. Well... the driver of this truck now dislikes the 24V Cummins engine with a passion.

It has had four lift pumps replaced in 100K and now needs a fifth as he couldn't prime his new filter two days ago. Additionally it just had its second VP44 replaced along side of the road. It simply quit running while he was going to northern Illinois... in the snow... in 0 degree wind driven temps. He was not a happy camper about having to sleep in a motel and wait on the parts to change it out.

After looking at it, the fuel tank is a driver side step tank and is a mere 2-3 feet away from the lift pump and not much lower at all. Its got a typical standpipe pickup and decent sized fuel lines.

Makes me think about how futile it is to try larger lines, improved fittings etc. The Carters and VP's seem to go out under the best of circumstances even when being driven by a highly trained diesel mechanic in a truck full of tools.
