99 2500 stranded at Peru, Ill. Symptoms are long crank after rest stop followed by engine dieout 2 miles later. Towed last night to motel. Started cold this morning with some coaxing but engine woun't accept any load at all. Idled normally (briefly) but began to smoke heavily and then died.

Have had low LP pressure for a year so changed out LP with new carter (Cummins) part and Vulcan relocation kit before this trip. Trip started fine with 15 psi , then 8, then 1-3 on hills. Started home to Detroit but didn't make it. Help!

fill the gas tank to full and see if it runs after that. Sometimes the valve at the bottom of the fuel canister will plugs and do the same thing. If it runs good, u know what u got to do

before it got to the "no start" point, it was worse right after a refill. LP press would improve as tank got down to 1/2 or less. Tank is nearly full now and has problem as described. Thanks for the post.

Thanks guys... ... ... just home on the flatbed tonight. Mechanic in Ill said only a code #1693 in PCM. I asked him what was in the ECM but said it was the same code in both. Seems strange that they're wouldn't be a separate , more specific code in the ECM. Currently no start, but did start once or twice with heavy smoke and no power.

Suggestions?

Where in Detroit are you?

Do you have any gauges?

What color smoke?

Crack an injector line open then turn the engine over to see if you are getting fuel to the injectors. Be preparded for a small mess.

Birminghan area. Have gauge pack with Westach fuel press gauge. Smoke is oily blue... indicative of overfueling or mis-timed VP44 pump. Some chance of bad fuel as problems happened right after a refueling. But truck had been losing LP press for several hours.

Thanks all for the help guys. Back home safely and will debug here at home over next few days. Nice to have such a good user community.

Let's consider this "911" thread closed.

Will do this Sat. Bought used pump from Olee Poole. So I'll be busy FriPM and Sat. Can't wait. I have read procedure in shop book a couple of times and it sounds pretty straight forward.
