VP-44 pump failures

I think that this is a good idea. I would suspect that there are alot of us out there that aren't sure of the problems that we are having are normal and our fault!!! I am on my 3rd lift pump and I am sure that I drove for a year on a failed lift pump that chrysler was not able to diagnose!!! Talk about fustrating! Does 130 rwhp sound normal out of a 235??? They thought so.

I for one use some 2-cycle oil in the #1 winter fuel so hope that this is a good idea. I have an engine bucking problem any one else?

Not all of us are able to navagate the pages yet for I am still learning. Thanks

67K and VP44 is running fine. 13K miles stock, added reflashed TST ECM and 275's while truck belonged to first owner who happened to be my best friend. I bought the truck @ 32K miles, replaced lift pump and added fuel pressure gauge and Ray's banjo bolts @ 48K miles, added PE Comp @ 65K miles.

82,764 and counting

good miles out of the vp44 the lift pump died around 62k didn't notice till I changed fuel filter, bombed early in life with tst wire tap and then later with EZ now comp and 275's engine running very strong but I will knock on my woody anyway! At work we have had two die on the medium duty isb both with no warning just died on driver. both less than 50k

Guess I'm kinda luck, I average 19,000 miles a year, so I will get 5 years of warranty coverage for the old VP44, and 2 1/2 years worth of free towing :-laf . If I own this truck 5 years from today it will be a record for me. I don't think I have ever had the same vehicle more than 4 years in my life. I ran my 2000 for several months with a dead lift pump and it was still going 20,000 miles later on the replacement lift pump and the same VP44. Wish we new what killed them?

I don't think you are very UNtypical of most vehicle owners = you lkely drive a bit more than average - and keep your truck slightly longer than average... That said, that is one of my points and reason for relative amazement at some who are fanatical about using stuff like Amsoil for the expected "longer lifespan" the synthetics are supposed to deliver, when they'll be likely to trade the vehicle off LONG before it's much more than well broken in...

Now, *ME*, I plan on being buried in MY truck, so giving it the "very best" makes sense... :p ;) :D

Gary, I agree people like to buy my used vehicles. I hate to abuse any vehicle. I have been known to over maintain knowing that I will not be the one that benifits from all of the extra maintance. Now that I am retired like you it is even worse since I have more time on my hands :-laf

Does anyone have any experance with engine bucking???? Or ECM or PCM problems. Any dynoed Hp and torque runs @ rpm that I could use for proof that my problem is ligt?????????

99 1 ton 3. 54 5 spd 4x4. Chrysler is still no help.

Original VP44 at 153k - no mods, would like to but scared!

I'd love to add an EX Comp to my truck, but am afraid to due to possible VP44 failure (extended selenoid hold time).

My truck has over 150,000 miles on it and (as far as I'm aware) is still on the original VP44. According to my OBD II scanner, no codes have been set.

After joining TDR I became aware of the lift pump problem and checked the pressure on mine. It was 3 pounds at idle! It had probably been that way for a long time, though I've no way of knowing. I replaced it with a FASS system and all has been good since then. The pressure remains between 16 and 18 PSI no matter what.

Anyway, this poll has helped. I'd like to hear about other folks who have long running VP44s and what the results may have been after adding a mod.

original VP just died

Some would say it is due to the comp, put it on about 10,000 miles ago. But I'm sticking with it was the original with 180,000 the comp did not do it that way putting it on the new one dont sound so bad. Yes it is going back on its to much fun not to. For those that wonder, should I put a box on??? YES Life is to short to say "what if". If it breaks fix it life goes on, have fun while you can. .

I have only drove my truck 3500 miles since I reworked it from a engine fire! It has 124000 miles and I dont know if its the original pumps or not but my lift pump puts out 16 at idle and 10 at wot, I have asked 3, 24 valve owners who bought their trucks new on how many lift pumps and VP44s that have been replaced and got this answer; 2 which are farmers and burn farm fuel from time to time had never had any problems with fuel pumps and their trucks had 150k miles on them and the other guy who pulled trailers for a living had replaced his vp44 once and his truck now has 660k miles and he said he puts on 1 lift pump a year! so thats what I came up with asking around?

Over 70K miles no prob with VP44, don't have fp guage hooked up yet, waiting for hose from Genos so I don't know what pressures are or if LP is failing.

VP44 poll

I think I am probably like most. We don't have enough info to help add to the data base. I bought my truck with 34034 miles and now have 41010. It is stock except for BHAF and I do not know the previous owner or how the truck was maintained. I don't have a gauge yet so I am in the dark as to what the lift pump is or isn't doing, but I have not had any power related problems so far.

Lost first VP at 50,000. Fueling box, at the time. Now 8 LPs later, I have a FASS and no longer worry about FP's. Also, the truck now has 100,000 with much more than a Fueling box, and sofar no problems ;).

First VP44 failure

I ran my truck out of fuel at 47,000 miles due to a faulty fuel gauge sending unit and then my truck developed a hesitation at 85,000 which ended being solved by replacing the VP44. I will NEVER run out fuel again. (I also will change the lift pump every 50-75,000 miles.

No problems @ 60k miles. Mods are: Edge EZ, MBRP 4" turbo back, BHAF, Autometer pyro, boost, fuel gauges, and replaced the entire fuel system with -8an and -6an fuel lines. Currently adding a Mallory 140 since the 4601 died in 2 weeks time.

Codes P1693 / P0216

Truck is stock. Took truck to dealer, no steady CEL but codes present. No replacement because codes were "not active". Took it back again within 5 days... told tech/service rep that I experienced loss of power and dead pedal. Dealer replaced VP44 (remanufactured). Getting ready to install big line pusher kit, install new lift pump back at frame rail near tank and replace leaking older style isolator to my fuel guage.

I will keep you posted...
