I have a feeling what the concensus is going to be from all the prior reading i've done, but here are the facts:

Erratic Idle for about a year

Loss of Fuel mileage over the last year

Good fuel pressure from the Lift Pump, 13psi at Idle, no less than 10psi wide open. 2 lift pumps installed since developement of idle and mileage problems.

Crank position sensor changed.

Hard to start on occasion. Cranks, Cranks, Cranks, Cranks, then starts.

Does this sound like an INjection pump?

If so, Other than guages, the truck is stock. Maybe looking at doing a box or injectors at the same time as the VP replacement. Best bang for the buck options?

Specs are in signature.

common symtoms

I alson have fluctuating idle over the last year, strange starting tendencies, loss of fuel mileage, and a degredation in power all over the last year. Good fuel pressure and I dont want to replace a vp44.

sounds like a VP44... ... i have the same problems... ... with 160,000 miles on the clock it may be time to change it, i have a new vp44 under the seat just waiting to go in, i just wanted this one to quit or give me the code first.

It sounds like a VP44 problem. But we have fixed quite a few hard starting issues with the new Smarty. We have them for sale and you might check us on VP44 pumps also. Thanks, Brady

DJLink, you are correct, it will show the codes with an additional scanner, but will not show the codes in the odemeter window like other models will.

I have had the same problems....

Sounds like you described my truck. Sort of a surge @ idle when first starting it, not from air in the system! Fuel economy dropped off slowly, and when cold, slight blue smoke for a few seconds from the exhaust when first started. (Indicative of the advance mechanism in the pump wearing out) Coming back from the Grand Canyon the other day, I got the dreaded "no pedal" response which turns out was not the APPS, luckily I didn't pay for one, I just kept on coming back to VA. You could let off of the pedal, and then push it down again and it would accelerate. I thought my wife was kidding me when she told me it was doing it, but when I drove it, I felt it do it. The closer we got to VA, the worse it got, and now I have the dreaded P0216 & P1693 codes. Guess it's time to get a pump...
