I just took apart 2 vp44s. Both had the donut shaped part the is in the line housing cracked. Is this a common problem? What couses it?

I doubt you will get any first-hand experience replies - the VP-44's are not user serviceable, Bosch only provides parts to authorized service facilities - and one subsequently needs to be next calibrated on a $25,000 test stand anyway.

Consequently, not too many owners bother taking them apart, and might not easily recognize problems if they did, especially if the actual failure was electronic rather than mechanical...

the broken part is know as the diaphram, this part is what gets damaged when vp44 is run with low lift pump pres. this part has gone thru an update and cracking failures are not nearly as common however we do see updated ones cracked.

p. s. gary i own 3 test stands doing vp44's the first two were 150k each the 3rd was 170k which is set up to do hpca (common rail)

thanks greg

Yeah, I thought my figure was probably low - I was going on my (defective) memory. I knew it was lotsa $$$, and amateur field repairs are WAY less than half the job, even if we COULD get the smarts and parts to do the repairs ourselves.

Thanks for the correction.

One of the vp44's that had a cracked diaphram did the following..... It would start fine but smell like unburned fuel. It had a bad miss, but not a single cylider miss. and a bad idle. This pump has had a 216 error since 60k It now has 110 on it. It also has a dead pedal some times.

Now assuming that the dead pedal is a computer problem and the 216 is livable. would the diaphram cause the other problems. Or could it have been cracked for some time. Also the fuel pressure is good for atleast the last 20k.

What are the symtoms of a cracked diaphram.

Possibly a trip to the car wash, with an engine wash, while the motor/fuel pump is hot??
