CRUISING DOWN TH ROAD AT 50 OR MORE, THERE IS A BUMP IN THE PEDAL. THEN THE TRUCK SLOWES TO 30-35. PUT IT INTO NEUTRAL, REV IT A BIT AND IT MIGHT START RUNNING CORRECTLY. I HAVE REPLACED THE LIFT PUMP 2 TIMES, CHECK FOR AIR LEAKS, NEW FILTER AND LINE INTO THE TANK. SHOWS CODE OF 216. ANY THOUGHTS

216 is vp-44 timing problem. jenerally means pump is dying. have you checked the lift pump pressure yet? fuel filter changed ?

NEW FUEL FILTER AND LIFT PUMP LESS THAN 100 MILES. SINCE THIS IS A FIRST TRUCK, (DIESEL). I DIDN'T WANT TO CHANGE THE PUMP OUT OF THE GATE. JUST NEED MORE MONEY. THANKS FOR THE REPLY

Any performance mods to the truck? I had a similar issue with driveability, fixed the problem with a better ground and better injector pump wire connection for my Comp box... FWIW

Please turn off the CAPS key. It makes it sound like you are yelling, and I am sure that is not the case. Hard to read for tired eyes.

Tnx,

John

Truck is bone stock, caps are off, sorry. where is a definition for all the initialed parts. Some I know others are total unknowns. Will do a ground. did you replace or make the wire to the comp box?

I've got a similar problem, except it only occurs at the end of a work day when I first leave the office and try merging into traffic. (and only if it has been sitting 9 or 10 hours) Basically goes into limp mode for a short period then flips back to normal mode. It runs great all the other times. To me it has to be an electrical wiring or sensor problem, rather than a complete failure of the vp44.

I've had it flip back to normal mode by pushing the clutch in and reving the engine a bit, but other times it hasn't helped and I drive a block or two before it kicks back to normal mode.

Bugs the hell out of me that so many people say replace the vp44 (great if you're under warranty still) rather than determining what is actually wrong and fixing that. Kind of like replacing your computer because the cooling fan died.

I also had a similar problem, got told by a dealer to replace the VP44, but after reading this list (and trying to separate the wheat from the chaff), I checked all my electrical connections and double checked them and the truck runs great again.

When mine was acting up, pulling over, turning off the motor, and restarting it usually put it straight back to 100%.

I have no idea what was loose, but it hasn't gone back into limp mode now for the 3 weeks since I jiggled every wire under the hood. It does kick a 0216 once in a while, but the truck runs better than ever!

That is an excellent analogy by the way, Irontrader.

Thanks

Somebody on here a few months ago had the dreaded P0216 code and it turned out to be a problem with the APPS. Just something else to check out if the wire wiggling comes up short.

What is the AAPS, where is it and what does it do? Limp mode on a diesel? Bypasses what sensors and I still don't know what all the initials mean? Yeah, I'm a beginner. Thanks to all who are submitting ideas. It is appreciated. Skip

APPS stands for Accelorator Pedal Position Sensor. Im not sure what voltage it should be at but if you do a search for the p0216 code there was a long discussion about it here not too long ago. The apps is located at the top front of the engine on the drivers side in front of the intake. Underneath that black plastic cover. Also like the others said check all your wire connections It would suck to change out the vp just to find it was a bad connection.

Pull the connection to the injector pump. It is a multi wire plug on the back of the pump. There is a small plastic part you pull towards you to unlock the wiring harness. I have checked a few and a couple of the pins get some corrosion on them and the electrical connections get messed up. Use a magnifying glass and if you see any red (rust) or greenish (corrosion) clean the contacts. Be gentle but make sure you clean it off good. :D

Thamks to all for their input. Have never see a better group of people that will help and ask for nothing in return other than a thank you and some advice later on if they have a problem. Thanks again, Skip

This always works for me. If on the road, turn Ign key off and back on. this will resume and take you out of limp mode .

oh, by the way. Just rolled over to 600,000. Catchme If You Can!!!
