Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Straight pipe is THE bomb...

There's a BIG difference between a rudimentary and basic check, and a detailed one that gives a decent picture of the overall condition of a VP-44 - and merely shorting a couple of wires really won't give ya much more than the fact it isn't completely dead... ;)

There is rudimentry and there is bench (basic!) test. If you have access to an osiliscope, 20k psi six position pressure flooded relief gauge, a computer that will allow access to the proprietary Cummins software that fires the VP44 and the ability to hook it all up... Go basic... . He needs a simple test on his rig. There are better tests out there, they cost money. The companies that sell re-maned pumps will likely do this for Steve. I was just "keeping it simple". Mike

Does anyone know if a VP44 pump can be tested for condition.

Looks to me like he wants more than a "go, no go" test - which is where the higher level stuff comes in - a simple wire-shorting test tells very little about "condition" - only if it is still at least slightly functioning - and even for that, the VP-44 must actually be installed on an engine...

But then with so little info supplied as to precisely what he IS wanting, makes it sorta hard to provide appropriate response...

There are 2 widely varying possibilities to the lead question - guy has a stalled truck, and needs to know if there's a quick and easy way to test the pump to zero in on the problem - or perhaps eliminate the VP-44 as the problem.

Second scenario is, guy has located a good buy on a used VP-44 of unknown quality - and wonders if there's any quick and easy way to test it to see if it's any good before laying out the cash - and THAT is the scenario I suspected and was commenting on... ;)

Gary I should have put problem in post. The truck does not seem to pull very hard on top end. Never noticed any real difference when I hooked up the pump wire on drag comp. Thanks Steve

AH! That info helps a lot!

If no accompanying issues seem present, check engine light, trouble codes set, erratic running, missing or cutting out, *I* would suspect other contributing issues not directly related to the VP-44 - probably a relatively simple sensor issue. When VP-44's go bad, they usually do it in a pretty invasive and unmistakeable manner!

If you have no noticable difference in the top end after connecting the pump wire then you either have it on the wrong wire or you have a bad connection. Or possibly a bad Comp. There should be a world of difference after the wire was tapped.

Thanks guys may have problem narrowed down to comp box ,should have new box by tommorow I'll post results with new box. Thanks again Steve

Comp box was the problem thanks to great customer service and Nathan at EDGE. Received new box today before noon. Truck now runs strong. Thanks Steve
