Ok Guys here is a statement I got off of the /www.dodgedieseldatabase.com site concerning VP44 replacement. I have a question I hope you can help me with before I do this.

(I barred the engine using the alternator nut to place the pump/gear keyway at the 12 O'clock position. You will need a gear puller to separate the injection pump shaft from the injection pump gear, then you can remove the 4 injection pump mounting nuts as well as the 2 bolts securing the injection pump lower mounting bracket to the engine block and then you can remove the injection pump from the gear housing. BTW, you will need a 27MM socket to remove the injection pump shaft nut. )

Q: (You will need a gear puller to separate the injection pump shaft from the injection pump gear)

Is this a special tool or gear puller? How do you get to it? there is no mention of this but I assume you remove it prior to unbolting the pump from the engine block.

Thanks for your Help. Rob

at the shop i work at, i use a t-bar syle puller that anyone can get aftermarket, you will need to get 2 bolts that will be strong enough to pull the gear, they sometimes are on the shaft very snug.

The drive gear is pressed onto the shaft of the pump and will have to be loosened before removing the pump. There is a special tool for this, but a small t-puller might work if their is enough room between the front of the engine and the shroud\radiator. Just make sure and take it slow when pulling the pump out so that the key does not fall out and go into the front gear train.

Thanks Tim but can you try posting the picture again or a link.

Is there any other web site that also explain how to do this replacement?

acook So I have to remove the front cover in front of the pump behind the fan to access the pump gear or do I access the pump gear thru the Bypass/Breather hole. Do I need to roll the key way up to 12 O'clock before removing the gear so that the key way does not drop?

Thanks, Rob

Thanks Partsman. I think that answer's all my questions.

Thanks All.

Any one know where I can get the special gear puller.

I used the gear puller from my 12v timing kit to pull the gear off of the VP44. .

Word of caution. . just make sure when you slide the new pump into place. . make sure the "key" lines up with the slot in the gear... Use a small mirror to make this easier. .

Make sure you don't catch the puller on the cover thus bending it out from the block. The tool that Tim posted looks like the cats meow for this job.

I originally used a cheap, small, $9 puller from a local autoparts store, and used the intake manifold bolts. They are the same threads. I have a blue chip puller too, which is similar to the city diesel and snap on pullers. The cheap one was probably not the highest quality, but it pulls the gear faster than the specialty one... There's only one thing to wrench on - the center piece that pushes the shaft, and the bolts just hold onto the gear and the puller forks. Hope that makes sense. Either way works.

RAJohnson did you get a puller yet? If not you can drive over here to W. Kennewick and borrow mine, give you an excuse to meet another Tri-Cities Bomber :D

Sorry I didn't catch this thread sooner.

EDIT: This link might be a good read, it's Kent Earnest's page on NW Bombers http://www.nwbombers.com/membersites/kent/vp44.html

Rob,

Vaughn was thinking the same thing I was... Kent Earnest posted a real good step by step pump removal and install with photos, Vaughn gives you the link at the bottom of his post.

Give us a shout if you need some help.

Vaughn, Dan thanks for all the help. ;) I am waiting on replacing for a couple more weeks. Do to $$$. I just wanted to be able to get all my ducks in a row before starting, like the removal of the gear (which was my biggest question). I will get a hold of you when I start to proceed with the replacement, and draw from your experience. Vaughn I would like to use your gear puller when its time if the offer still stands. PM me your P#'s and hopefully we can get together and talk trucks. Or I can PM you guys mine.

Thanks Rob

Vaughn - Thanks for posting the link - I had it before and lost when my PC took a dump and had to reload windows (suc*s). Whew - thanks alot!
