All makes sense now , its looking at crankshaft acceleration. I think Cummins is going to this on some engines to eliminate the camshaft position sensor. The idea is if the ecm knows which injector is comanded to fire and if it sees no acceleration on number one cylinder than it will assume it was at TDC #6 when it tried to fire and refigure everthing from that point, so it knows where #1 TDC is. (Kind of a rough explanation. )
I don't think you will need any additional software, just the Domestic cartridge should do it. As you model years get newer, the way It was sold to me was some of the diagnostics in DRB may stay the same, some will change etc, in other words your old cartridge may work to some extent on newer rigs. I don't think you will hurt anything by trying it. I haven't hooked up to an 03 yet to see. As a matter of fact I've only hooked it up to take a look, if you ever do it one of the things that is different is shorting out the cylinders follows the firing order. 1=1inj 2=5inj 3=6inj etc.
By the way, what engine models and displacements are running the VP on Deeres.
Are you nuts about old or new, or all tractors? I have a JD M wide front, I use to pull a trailer around and run a post hole digger. Doesn't do much work but the neighbors all get a kick out of it.
