Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP44 Warranty

I've driven my truck 1800 miles in the last 3 working days and on the way home tonight had a little problem. i was holding about 2300 rpms in thrid coming thru a small town. when i got to the 55 sign i floored it and nothing happened. no acceleration, no whistle, no nothing, for about 2 seconds, then it took off like normal. i tried it again later and i was able to make it do it again. when i got home i checked the codes and im showing a 0216 (injection pump timing failure).



I know this sounds like the vp44 is crapping out on me, because its already happened once, 48,000 miles and 8 months ago, same codes, same symptons. the dealer replaced the pump under warranty... . but now im at 136,000 miles.



my question is, does anyone know if the VP44 comes with any warranty on it. it only has 48,000 miles on this pump. im not looking foward to shelling out the money for the pump, so please help me.

theres more involved except a simple pump change and mucho bucks

If it ends up being your baby to pay for and you want to go back with another VP44, I have heard that you can get them from a place in Texas for $750 new. Do a search on here for more info.



I paid $1500 for my new one... before I knew about the $750 deal.

There are two reasons for the P0216, Fuel Injection Pump Timing Failure. One is the expensive VP44 has been trashed and the other is caused by a significant fuel restriction to the VP44. The ECM sends a command to the FPCM to advance the timing and the FPCM increases the duty cycle to the timing solenoid in the VP44. If the timing signal coming back to the FPCM is wrong, this sets the code. The timing change uses fuel pressure to rotate a ring on the high-pressure pump. If the fuel filter is restricted, the lift pump is dead, or the fuel tank screen is blocked, not enough fuel is available to the VP.



I would check the cheap stuff first. A positive fuel pressure to the VP may tell you it is not the cheap stuff.

Thanks for the help. i was about to not check anything and just let the pump die. i didnt realize that a failing lift pump could cause the p0216 code. i will be ordering a FP gauge in the very near future. thanks again for the info.

Just picked mine up at the dealer today. New VP-44 under warantee. 78000 miles. symtoms: 0216 code. really hard to start warm for awhile. got hard to start period. erratic idle. sometimes it lope like a 'Jimmy" hunting for idle. when it would first start it would stall once when I let out the clutch. You could hear the timing change after it started.

I drove it to the dealer, shut it down, they couldn't start it until the next day. That pretty much convinced them it needed a pump

i have 98. 5. had 95. 649 miles on it. 5 year 100,000 mile warranty.

mileage was fine. 5 years they told me was up on aug 27. vp 44 blew on aug 30, 3 days late. dodge would not cover. they put in reman vp 44 cost me $2,300 with towing included. . service writer at autoworld dodge in petaluma told me reman pump had 1 year 100,000 mile warranty on it. so your pump should be covered still.
