Does anyone know if you can repair or replace the fuel pump control module or does it have to be preformed by a fuel pump shop? Or do you just bite the bullet and buy a recon pump? :{

if the electronics are dead, yes need to either send it to a pump shop for repair or buy a new pump and use your's for the core (charge)

What makes you suspect the electronics are bad, rather than a mechanical problem?

No reason, heres whats going on. On start up on the morning, slight haze of blueish smoke. When rolling on the throttle it sputters almost like its loading up, sounds like a backfire and when this happens blows alot of white smoke. I suspect the inj pump is failing. Alot of money to spend if a person guesses wrong.

I hate to keep harping on the same old theme - but you DO have guages don't you - and if so, what does your fuel pressure read while all this smoke and backfiring is going on?

Probably the NUMBER ONE most common problems with these 24 valve engines, is FUEL related - and the NUMBER ONE tool needed to quicly identify or isolate specific areas to check for the source of problems, is a fuel pressure guage.

Without proper, basic, tools and info, it's REAL hard to isolate these sort of problems - and as stated, you sure hate to be blindly throwing $2000 parts at a $2 problem! ;) :D

Back while we were still in California, and I was able to attend local Dodge group get-togethers, I made up and carried a mechanical fuel pressure guage and offered it to check members trucks for PSI. 2 things became quickly evident:

1. Most truck owners, even longer term owners STILL don't have guages.

2. One out of 3 trucks had either dangerously low, or FAILED lift pumps - with the high likelihood of accompanying VP-44 damage due to lost lubrication and cooling!

Experiencing the above first hand is EXACTLY why I keep after the GUAGES, GUAGES, GUAGES! bit! It just MIGHT save a guy serious $$$, and inconvenience somewhere down the road!
