Need imput for more HP for towing

Mobil Rebate $3/gallon

Does the Navistar VT365 have the typical problems associated with the Powerstroke version? I'd ask on dieselstop.com but I'm banned there. I lurk on the Ford and GM boards to gleen all the info I can on the "light duty" diesel mills. Apparently mentioning I owned a Cummins powered Dodge was enough to get banned from posting there. Touchy folks those Ford guys! :-laf

The engine itself is a POS: Blown head gaskets, turbocharger failures, injector failures causing fuel dilution in the oil and often engine damage. Add to that the electronics problems causing stalling, CEL/limp home mode, etc associated with the ferd side of it and you have a bonified POS. The troubles were worse in the ferd applications, but the 6. 0/365 is an unreliable engine that about bankrupted ferd and neverstart. It is no wonder ferd uses the Cummins in their medium trucks.

neverstart

LMAO!:-laf Hadn't heard that one before!

I was wondering th same myself, soot. The IH dealer doesnt seem to be backlogged with 4200's not running.

My 550 is pushing 42k miles and hasnt had troubles yet, but its a turd to drive and software gets confused easy. It doesnt start in the cold very well, either.

Yes... they exhibit variable turbocharger issues, EGR system issues, and there is a current recall on the fuel injectors.

They weren't as much of a disaster as the 2003 Ford versions, but they aren't the superest mostest favoritest engine for the fleets who are running them.....

Don't forget leaky egr coolers and sounding like a bag of hammers in a washing machine after the flash that removes the third injection event.

Is it my imagination or is FedEx Ground using them in their step vans? They have someones V-8 diesel inside and I doubt it's an Isuzu.

I noticed that too. And last Friday I listened to a UPS truck that sounded just like a VT365.

I was under the impression that most UPS trucks run the Cummins 5. 9. Not sure what most of the FedEx trucks run.

I think the fed/up trux are a mixed bag. I've herd ISB, 7. 3's, 6. 0, auto and manual shift stop at work. Even untill very lately the ups truck has been an I6 GAS engine!

I like how it's "normal" that my intercooler hoses are SOAKED with engine oil. The turbo is supposed to pass oil. WTF. That goes against all I've known to be normal.....

Any diesel with the crankcase vented back into the intake will have oil soaked tubes..... you should see what happens to our boat when the Airsep screws up. Good lord what a mess!!!!

....A year later

Last fall I started having "hard start with warm engine" symptoms, then it stranded me on a jobsite. I was afraid of being stranded, so for most of a week the truck was not shut off for 8-10 hours untill I got back home, but one OOPS! refex shutdown and I was stuck.

That ended up being a cracked fitting on the outlet of the hi-pressure oil pump. Truck was only down a week.

Last week I was in for scheduled maintinence at ford, I was advised the coolant was 1/2 gallon low. It's almost that low again, aparently it's drinking collant. Looks like we're going in for head gaskets-- the frd dealer says two weeks down this time:{:{ It really sucks 'cause I'll have to work in the shop instead of field service, AND with someone else's tools

Are we to believe the 6. 4 is any better? Ford ceased offering diesel E-series vans as of 2 years ago, so I suppose that clears up the ambulance problem.

What a mess.

Anyone know what some of the newest ones have for power? It sounds a lot like the 904 series Mercedes we have in the snowcats at work - all turbo whistle.

A lot of the shorthaul or expediter FedEx trucks are Mercedes-Benz vans with MB diesel power.

IMHO, if you want a good diesel with IH or Navistar stamped in the block, buy a DT-466C or earlier (mechanical versions). Those engines were THE engine to have in their heyday (70s and early 80s), owing to bulletproof construction and superior crossflow intake-exhaust path versus the JDs of the 70s. Having grown up on Red Power (you farmboys remember that phrase?) on the farm, I knew from experience a 466C could handle over 300HP. Dad's 5488 was turned up (fuel screw kept backing out) to over 300 HP from I think 180HP rated, and the dealer chief mech said it was like he'd set it up to go to the pulls. Told Dad he was afraid to put it on the 500HP side of the dyno. The engine kept burning EGT sensors.

Dad used to pull a 24 ft field cultivator in front of his planter, and when they backed it off to 230, it was a dog in the clay loam soil in the Evansville (IN) area bottoms. Pulling a 15 ft chisel plow, it would spin out before it would bog down. A neighbor farmer told Dad he knew when he saw the rolling smoke it was either Dad on the 54, or the coal train going to ALCOA.

Never had any engine issues, but have had to replace the gears, and we knew that was expected, based on a discussion with a dealer mechanic in Yale, IL about 5 years or so before we did it.

Oo. Oo. Amen brother! Amen!

That 5488 reminds me of the stories I've been told of an 806 dad farmrd with in the 70's. I'll just say it had alot of 1206 parts, and then some, It alegedly broke the only dyno it was ever on. :-laf
