When I did the install I was delivering campers all over the country and had a 115 gal tank in the bed that I wanted to suck from. Not delivering campers anymore, took the tank out, but I don't haul anything in the bed currently. If I was afraid of damaging it I would build an aluminum shield for it as it is tucked in the side of the bed where it really doesn't stick out at all.
And yes, it eliminates any road damage and cannot be attacked by the salt, water, mud, etc. I also have a tonneau cover which helps protect it but was not the reason for putting it on.
