Apparently yesterday was an off day for me... Came to work this morning to be told I was supposed to be in two meetings I had no idea about and somehow I came up with a difference of $40 when subtracting $70 from $130.....

whats a lunch brake? or break? whatever

I bill at $75/hour. I would have to research, design, make hoses, and install in only 48 min. just to break even. brake even. whatever :p

I completely feel for having to do things in the most "economical" fashion, but you gotta pick your battles. At this point nate yer just about comitted time wise to go ahead and build this kit.

Dont forget to scrap the 1/4" tube from filter to VP. Probly the most restrictive part.

Yeah I'm going to go shop for the parts on Monday.

I don't mean for my posts to put down the Vulcan kit, or Eric. Not at all. I think his price is fair, afterall he does need to put food on the table.

I just like putting stuff together on my own if I can. I don't need some of the extra fittings that the Vulcan kit has, and I'm also just going to do 3/8" line I think. I'll have to figure out the cost different with the fittings and hose to see if the 1/2" is worth it to me.

Mainly I just want to relocate the lift pump.

Yeah we get an hour lunch break, though I very rarely eat lunch anyhow, so I just stay at work.

At 1/2 price (roughly) and not having stupid vendors to deal with-- sounds like you got parts lined up well-- thats a pretty good deal.

as for 3/8 vs 1/2-- the 3/8 should be ample. The vulcan 3/8 suction hose I think is primarily that size 'cause thats the OD of the steel tube comming from the tank. Plus being NEXT to the fuel, the LP isnt stressed so much for pulling fuel. The 1/2 beyond LP just makes less resistance to flow

I dont see 3/8 hose bieng a problem, and if genos' is selling that it shurely cant be bad.

I just recently had a lift pump die on me. Fed up with the price of the lift pumps from the ******* I decided to remove it from the truck all together. I odered AN fittings and stainless fuel line to do this and changes all of the lines from my pusher pump to the VP-44. Before I did this I was having problems with fuel pressures clear over 30psi. I really don't know how high the pressures were getting as my gauge doesn't go higher. After removing the factory lift pump the pressure comes up very slowly. I can drive for a few minutes with now pressure on the gauge. When I was driving home from work today in traffic I saw the pressures up around 28psi. Once I cleared the traffic at WOT I saw the pressure drop a little. The next time I looked up a few minutes later I had no pressure at all. Then after awhile the pressure started to come up again. I am using a carter 4600 pump instead of the lift pump. I am trying to avoid using the factory pump as I took the two that have failed apart and found that it is the coupling between the vane rotor and the motor that have failed. It is made from plastic and sheared. I find this very upsetting as there is no reason that it needs to be made that way. I would feel a lot better if it had burned up the motor.

I don't understand why I have fuel pressures all over the place.

If the carter 4600 will not work what is the best pump to get other than the stock pump and the FASS or RASP. I asked for those when this all started and my wife snaped.

Any help would be great,

Ben

Do you have more information about which pump to look at. I was just reading about the FASS and it says for my year that I need between 200 and 150 GPH.

I made my own kit about 3 years ago when there were no kits available. If I remember right, I spent about $50 for the parts back then. No matter what you buy, make sure ALL fittings have at least a 5/16 inch ID!!! If they do not, DRILL THEM OUT!!! What is the point of installing a big old 1/2 inch line with fittings that have a 1/4 inch ID???

The line from the filter housing to the VP is the most restrictive part of the system! I did my modifications in stages. Replacing that line made the most difference in the fuel pressure!

If I were doing it now, I would probably buy the kit and avoid the hassles. That was not an option back when I did mine.

I just did the Geno's Vulcan kit. I removed the snap on bango fitting at the LP input and pushed a little air back into a 5/8 tank of fuel. Had very little fuel drop on me when I cut the line with mini tube cutter. Bleed it good before restarting. Now lunch and then a road test.

OK, road test done.

Pressure Before After

Idle... ... . 14. 5... . 15. 5

Cruising. . 12-13. . 14. 5

WOT... ... 6-8..... 11. 5

Also this is at 43205 Miles. Really use the truck, right! The Original LP. Thinking about installing the new spare to make sure that it is a good pump.

Well I got all the parts yesterday. Cost was $55.

I decided to go with 3/8" Mainly because they didn't have 12mm x 1/2" adapters even listed in the catalog. I would have needed to go from 12mm to 14mm and then a 14mm to 1/2" adapter.

I just feel like I can't stress this enough! Before installing the fittings, make sure EVERYTHING is 5/16 ID MINIMUM!!! If the fittings have a smaller hole, drill them out!!! If you can fudge a little larger without a problem, do so! What is the point of running a big line that is fed through 1/4 inch holes??? I am convinced that it will help the pressure at the VP to make sure the fittings have an adequate ID size!

I just brought mine from genos too. Does anyone have pictures on how to do it? Im a picture kinda guy. :p Also does anyone have an aftermaket lift pump on their truck? If so how is it working? Thank you Rick.

Yes. The Vulcan kit suplies good quality worm gear clamps, the solid kind that dont cut the hose. The wire harness obsrtucts the view, but there is 3 or 4 inches of overlap. This so far has provided ample seal for the suction side.

You can see part of my clamp, and note the "end of hard line". I mocked the pic up for another post in a similar thread.

Another note: After seeing what the unpainted pumps look like i have pulled off, I cleaned this one and painted with equipment enamel, "left over" from my work truck :)

What is the $70 lift pump you refer to...

In this forum you guys talk about other lift pumps, the $70 pump, another that redlines the needle on a 30psi fp gauge and after several guys asked what pumps these are... nobody chimes in with the answer... What pumps are we talking about? Thank you.

Thee Vulcan kit iss a great idea except thatt it still uses the Carter pump. I've already changed one and have a Walbro from Glacier Diesel staanding by. .

Obert. Yes your painted pump looks good... . :D I will put my kit in this weekend. I have a new pump and will paint it too.

I have another question, If you put the fass pump in can you take the side mounted filter off? Does those filters replace the filter on the stock one? Thanks again. Rick
