My mom and dad have a 03 and love it. Good get up and go and great fuel economy. The newer ones don't need the timing belt changed out so fast like the older. You can buy chips for them and bomb them too.

01 TDI

My wife bought an 01 new 2 1/2 years ago. Great car, 45 mpg winter and 50 + summer. Drives and handles well, she has over 75,000 miles on it and it's been trouble free except a cracked fuel line when it was new. VW handles warranty and roadside good.

That being said it's no Cummins, kinda wimpy sounding as a diesel.

I don't think you can go wrong with a TDI. Tried to get one in 98 for the wife, but she didn't want to go on the waiting list...

Have 2 friends that have em and love em.

Thanks all!

Thanks for the info everyone!! I love this site! I'm close to becoming a total diesel family including the Kubota.

Mark - what's that chipset you refer to for bombing it? Does this void the warranty?

What about bombing the Kubota???? Just kidding (maybe).

The chip I would recommend is the Upsolute... lots of good reviews on this one. There's an Upsolute dealer in Ayer, MA... . you have to have your factory ECM flashed with the new chip info.

Boxes can also be used (same power increase... ) and may be swapped in and out with no reflash needed.

I'm doing the equivalent of Stage IV injectors in my TDI in the next month or so... . I already have them... just gotta find the time to take 'em out... . swap the nozzles... . test 'em and slap 'em back in.

BTW, Deo Read (therabbittree) has a BOMBed Kubota lawn tractor... . blows soot just like the big toys! They're pretty easy to turn up..... We're putting 38hp injectors and a turbo on it in the spring. :D

Beware: Some of the members of the tdiclub forums are VERY conservative and shoot down a lot of things that are not in the owner's manual.

I've noticed that... some think that if they were supposed to have alot of power VW would've built them that way. I guess they just don't appreciate a little bombing.

Exactly!

I don't even go to that site anymore for that reason. There are very few of those guys that take new and innovative ideas seriously. Do a search for "Blow off valve" on that site if you want to see a good example of me being ridiculed for asking a valid question.

Even years back when I turned wrenches the Hans And Franz types with BMWs and MB were of a differant mold!BMW motorcycle owners were like from some other galaxy in the solar system. no offence intended but its true. Cummins diesels with a Harley in the bed. NOW that scares them!;)

:) I took my wife to test drive the new jetta diesel and the Honda accord and we were going to test the camry. Didn't make it to Toyota, she loved the Accord v-6 coupe. Since she works and drives everyday, I said it's your decision, although i tried to push the jetta. The accord is a nice ride,I'll give it that! Tim;)

Yeah,

I went through the same thing with my wife earlier this year. I pushed the TDI really hard, but it lost out to the accord coupe in the end. Ultimately, it came down to 2 v. 4 doors:(

After a little :-{} I took the high road and let her decide without any grief.

They are both great cars, but only one is diesel.

Getting the gals over the diesel noise and slight smell is a bit tough.

I got my girlfriend sold on diesels completely. She has even grown to love the smell of raw and burnt diesel fuel.

Warning!: Don't use it as cologne - it'll irritate your skin. :D
