Powerstroke exhaust brake?

Anybody ever changed transmission fluid in a VW Jetta TDI. Mine has the 5 speed manual transmission (it's an '03) and I can't find much info on changing the fluid, how often and what type oil.

I've been on a few different VW sites and didn't find much there. My manual say zilch about the transmission or its fluid requirements.

I've done the engine oil once and there was no clear separation between the engine and transmission. Saw a few other possible drain points under there but don't know what is what.

If you have any good web pages (looked at "Freds TDI" page)

that might help too.

Thanks... Mike

The drain plug is a very large hex plug on the bottom of the transmission with the same size plug for a fill plug. I believe the fluid is GL-4. I can confirm this in the morning if you want. Just let me know.

I think alot have put the Amsoil S2000 75W90 in the transmission. They say the VW oil in it is synthetic. There are some other types that are used but I don't remember now. If you go back to Freds and do a search you should find it or look under the section that has questions.

Thanks!!

OK guys, thanks for the replies. I'm having trouble logging onto Freds TDI page but I'll keep trying there.

I don't think this needs changing for awhile but I just don't see much info out there on the subject.

And whats up with the manual???? You would swear that there was no transmission by reading that. I don't think VW wants us to mess with their car.

Thanks again... ... ... Mike

If you do a search over on Freds for transmission oil under general maintenance you should get some answers. Redline MTL is suppose to be another good one.

I too have a 2003 Jetta TDI Wagon. I only have 7,000 miles on it. I will probably use Redline MTL when the time comes. I've used it before in a T-5 5 speed in a 5. 0 Mustang. Shifting was silky smooth. It is GL-4 compatible. -Glen

Redline

Glen, thanks for the link. I noticed that some of the TDI owners are using the Redline instead of the VW stuff (whatever that is).

I was thinking about dumping the transmission fluid at 20k or there abouts just because. I'm sure it's not required but this Jetta has to last as long as the Dodge.

So... I go the extra mile and keep ahead of things. What an incredible little family car. I just can't get over the mileage it gets and it has a little pep too.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

mhenon,

Most people on Fred's that have tried different transmission oils report that none equals the OEM fluid when it comes to shift quality. It is a European synthetic 75W-90. I can't remember how expensive it is, but it is what I plan to use when I change mine.

If you want a little more zip from your TDI, go to www.kermatdi.com and check out his Bosio injector nozzles. I installed the PP520's on matched injectors and it made quite a difference. I am still averaging 50-51 MPG in my wife's 2003 Beetle.
