Divorce Letter

Thinking of getting a VW Jettta diesel for my wife. I see from from signatures a few members have them and wondering how you like them and what mileage you are getting. :)

We had a 98 for 131K miles, until somebody rear ended me. AT 131K miles it still only burnt 1 quart per 10K oil changes. I used to get around 42mpg running it like a sports car.

We how have an 05 "new" jetta. Its got around 12,000 miles on it. We love it, she is getting low 40's mpg. Be sure to check out there DSG automatic trans. Its the best auto trans I have ever driven bar none! That's because its really a manual trans with a dual disk clutch and the ECM runs it! No clutch pedel.

The only things to think about are the timing belt must be changed. The New TDI Pd motor is something like 80K mile change. Something else is you must use VW spec oil in it. There are only a couple. I use Motol, it cost me around $45. 00 with an oil filter to change it myself.

Check out TDIclub.com and look at forums. Much like this place :D

My wife has an 06...

It got a VA box at 1500 miles, she has about 4500 on it now, and LOVES IT!

(I do too)... :-laf

I saw this car at the see food challenge, I have never seen a VW smoke like that :-laf

That is an excellent car to get your wife! I bought mine an '05, old body style, and she just loves it. At first she wasn't crazy about it but after i got her to drive it, she fell in love with it. The best tank we ever got was 52 MPG on a trip to wisconsin. With all her hot rodding around town she gets about 42 with the A/C on. The five speed in it is very smooth shifting as well as the automatics that i've driven. I am personally amazed at the quality they put into such a small car, all the way down to the owners manual. We have just over 16000 miles on it and can't say enough good about it. If you go to drive one be ready to buy it... . I love it when there is a gas craze going on and nobody can find gas to put in their cars... I'll be sitting there just pumping away smiling! #ad

My '04 gets around 45mpg in the city and 700 miles per tank :) It's also quicker to 50 than my Dodge :(

Great car, no problems.

Not to HIGH JACK the thread but my wife has the 1. 8T Jetta.

180hp model, these things are pretty snappy if you want a nice 4 cylinder turbo charged gas engine.

You might want to test drive one. As the TDI is an option engine so is this and commands a higher resale value also.

I just took the 05. 5 TDi out in the snow. road has about 2" packed snow on it, car has the traction control, dif lock, abs, etc.

All I can say is man does this thing work great in the snow!

Does your car make a ratcheting sound sometimes when the traction control is trying to stop wheel spin? My '05 old body style makes a bad sound when trying to break 'em loose on snow.

Thanks,

Dan

I don't think I heard any noise when the traction control was coming on in the snow, but the ABS does make a sound when it was kicking in, just like the RAM does. I relize the traction control is really just the ABS system applying brakes on the wheel that is spinning but I don't think it made a noise.

We bought the Beetle in May with 125K and except for a few electrical issues(3rd brakelight, radio, AC) it has been a nice car. The guy that sold it to me claimed it out handled his Porsche 944 and I believe him.

Average mileage is 48 MPG.

I bought the Jetta in September with 60K and it's a lot more plush. Very smooth power with the automatic but the mileage is not as good ~39MPG.

Still better than the gas motor and I am betting it will last longer.

The EGR is a pain to clean but it helps the engine warm up really fast.

I don't know about the new models but if you like performance go with the manual.

We have an 04 Jetta auto. I get 39 MPG in the city. Not 45.

My 02 Golf TDI 5spd did a lot better mileage wise. But of course it was lighter and 5spd. I would suggest a) getting a manual and b) NOT getting a Pump-deusse (04+?). It takes "dealer only" $6/quart oil and doesn't seem to get as good mileage as the older ones.

What kind of mileage do you get with the turbo??
