Sidetracked again ( I now own a boat)

Will I see that the EPA has finally approved affix for the 2009-2014 VW TDI 2.0L diesel. Supposedly there is a new program to be installed along with a new NOx catalyst and for 2009 models some more changes. My DW is happy now he gets to spend the 6K that VW is also giving her for the inconvenience this has caused her.

In my humble opinion the inconvenience is the EPA who is going to pay me for them?

I may be wrong, but I believe the fix is ONLY for 2015 models.

I've seen a couple locally fs at dealers......for full sticker price.:--)
 
Yep, which fully explains why VW has been stock piling every car they bought back in areas like the Silver Dome. I'm betting most if not all will be reintroduced to the market once "fixed".
 
I hadn't seen the fix for the older ones yet good news. The stockpiles I suspect it will be dependent on the cost of the actual fix in addition to what they have already paid out to determine how many years back they may be willing to try and resell them. Ie fake numbers just an example 2009 worth 5k cost to fix is 4k not worth the effort as it could be a zero sum game vs a 2015 that might be worth 15k and cost 4k to fix. There is a stockpile here just south of Colorado Springs in a huge open field next to the Pikes Peak Raceway that is massive and is bigger every time I drive by several thousand cars in it if not more.
 
Barry I agree with your assessment from a logical stand point, it just makes me wonder why ALL have been stockpiled if VW plans to scrap the lesser valued ones. Every move costs money, if I were counting beans for VW I would have come up with a cut off number, above gets parked and below goes straight to the scrap yard. That's over simplifying of course but you get the gist.
I'm guessing they knew more than they let on from the get go and the approved fix is cheaper than has been anticipated. These pesky EPA dealings take time ya know :-laf
 
IMO, the biggest "X factor" in whether or not my wife and I will keep our 2013 Sportwagen is how much the new software "fix" negatively affects MPG and performance. I am NOT at all sure about the truth of the following statement, but on another truck forum someone posted about losses of up to 12mpg with this fix. This is anecdotal, and it IS hard to believe, as it is only one post without even a reference, but it does NOT leave me hopeful about keeping our TDI at this point in time.

If it is in fact the case that the software fix catastrophically reduces MPG, I might have to buy us a well maintained 2005 Passat wagon or even a Tesla Model 3.

So all that being said, have any of you guys heard about any of the EFFECTS of EPA approved "fix" ??
 
Seafish you are certainly right about the xfactor being the unknown at least yet. I know on the 2015's there had been a ton of speculation on how much it was going to effect performance and mileage. People put out all kinds of guesses of which I think 10% was the general number thrown about the most. However once the fix started getting installed turns out it seems to be fairly negligible at least according to the folks over at the TDI Club. The previous generations are a whole different animal though. Will be interesting to see. Should know within the next couple months. I just checked the vw court settlement website and included a link here VW is forecasting up to 2 mpg decrease among other things

I could live with the 2MPG loss on my wife's TDI. This is a 2011 with only 48,500 on the OD. We bought the car for longevity, she normally keeps her car 10+ years. So the little mileage drop won't effective us that much.

I can report the exact mileage drop over a couple of months of usage, since I track all of my fuel mileage on both vehicles. She right now is seeing 31.1 MPG around town and some county road driving. The highest MPG she had was 34.3 for the yearly average when she took a couple of road trips with the car that year and the lowest was 32.4 with her normal driving around town for a year.
 
I just received a e-mail from VW USA informing us of the approved fix. VW should be contacting me soon to notify us that parts are at the dealership and when we should schedule the fix.
 
Update to this post. My wife's TDI went into the shop yesterday (8-18-17) for the recall 23U3. The recall replace the NOx catalyst and than reprograms the ECM. I drove the vehicle to and from VW dealer. So far the performance seems the same and the throttle response is the same, drivability is great. The Jetta went in with a fuel tank of fuel less 57 miles of usage so, I will be able to tell in the next few fill-ups how much we lose in fuel mileage.
 
i don't understand why even get the fix? you are not "required" to. why not just keep the car the way it was?


This may be bogus, but who really knows. I heard at a VW dealer that when a fix does come out and you don't bring it in the DMV will not renew your tabs until it is fixed.

We had a '12 SW that we turned in a couple months ago. We turned it in with 140K miles on it. That car saw all kinds of driving. It never saw as low as 31.1 mpg. Even hot rodding around town, back roads or 100+ mph for long periods of time on the highway it never got that low. I know every car is different, but 31-34 mpg in a TDI is not good mileage. Now, if after the "fix" the mileage goes down even more, that car would either go to Malone or it'd be gone. I've been around a lot of TDI's of all different years and have never seen mileage that low. I'm not trying to trash on your car, but something is not right. One thing to consider, our new '17 Jetta sedan gasser with the latest/greatest emissions is getting 38 mpg. This car was cheaper to purchase, has a lifetime warranty on the whole car, gas is cheaper and waaay cheaper to maintain.

Heard the same thing and I doubt it is bogus. Without any enforcement of the recall then there is no point to it except to raise money for the EPA through the huge fines that VW paid.

Oh, wait a minute...???LOL
 
I am surprised about the low mileage on those newer TDIs.
Wife has a 99.5 TDI that gets 50 mpg in town or highway. It's getting up there in mileage (172K) but we'll keep it till it pukes.
