Many, many people have asked me about my crew cab project and where it bagan. Most often asked are for pics of the truck. I have posted this thread here as opposed to the project section as this thread will cover many first gen upgrades and mods that would be missed by many people that do not follow the Project section of the site. Hopefully this will answer many questions on what or how to do something to upgrade their first gen.

I have a few minutes, so I thought I would start a thread... .

Back in 2003 when I got the 1990, I had one complaint: Interior space. After reading on the forums here that crew cabs could be motor swapped, I did some looking. For those that have been around here for a while, you may remember this thread:

Here is a recap of a few pics for comparison:

The day I got it:

The day I took it apart. The day that started it all!;)

Well, after driving the truck for a year I found a small list of issues that needed atention ranging from no PDL or PW, to a fried Getrag. The bed had a big hole, rust issues, cab mount missing, all the stuff you expect on a 500K mile truck. So on Dec 24, 2005, I started pulling door panels to see what was underneath and why the window would not open. Well, it snow balled.

Disassembly started and a massive restoration started. As of this writing, I am a few weeks shy of 5 years and it is still not done. Granted, 1 year and 8 months were lost to errors by the paint shop. I am planning for spring, but time will tell if that happens.

As the truck sits now, it is as follows:

BODY:

1980 Dodge D350
8' Box

MOTOR:

1997 12V CPL 2174
PDR Towing Twins
181 Taper cut DV's
DDP Stage 2 injectors
FASS 95 GPH
Cometic head gasket
60 PSI springs
Banks twin ram intake
PDR 2nd gen intercooler/CAC
2nd gen rad
ATS Exhaust Manifold
ARP Head Studs
3000 GSK
#10 Plate

DRIVELINE

2004 NV5600
SBC DD 3350 (I think, have to look that up) Clutch
1993 NP205 T Case
1993 W350 front Dana 60 3. 54
Gear Vendors Overdrive
1997 Dana 80 3. 54 Drum brake (will see how long those stay there! ;))

SUSPENSION

Rear: 4 link Kelderman rear with 2 trailing arms per side - all rear leaf springs removed
Front: 3 leaf springs per side (for axle alignment) and 2 Kelderman air bags for support

INTERIOR:

2008 Dodge Charger SRT8 bucket seats - 4 total with center console in rear
Door panels custom upholstered to match seats - black with red stitching
Custom dash cluster
22 Autometer gauges (Lets see here: pyro, tach, speedo, 2x fuel, trans temp, diff temp, Gear Vendors temp, Oil temp, Oil pressure, 2x Boost (1 post and aft intercooler), Exhaust Back Pressure, Intake temp, Water temp, Air tank pressure, 3x Air bag pressure, Volts, Fuel Pressure, Intake Vacuum)
Custom Infinity sterio with 10inch sub

OTHER RANDOM ITEMS:

PRXB `4 inch inline exhaust brake
Air compressor with 8 gal tank
5 Gal onboard water tank with shower head (if you get dirty, wash up before getting back in the truck... ;))
Ramcharger fuel tank in place of rear spare
Stacks
4 inch turbo back Stainless exhaust
Remote bypass oil filter
Heated, Lighted, Power West Coast Mirrors
Twin Wilson 5000 Mirror mount antennas
2wd Low on aux shifter
24K LBS 5th wheel hitch with underbed rail mount

Those are the big items. There are way too many small things to add so when you see it in a picture, you will know it is on there too! :-laf

Over the course of the next few weeks I will continue to add pics as I have thousands of them and uploading them does seem to take a while!

Sorry in advance for some of the blurry shots. Unbeknownst to me at the time, the camera had a cracked internal lense. Many pics from this period are wrecked. I thought I would still post a few of them.

Nice build !!!!!

I got a few questions What needs to be done to convert the frame to accept the 4x4 axel ? Also on the Clutch mastercylender What year did you use or did you cut and weld the fire wall in ? Im doing the simular build but i dont want to hack the firewall or if i can splice the frame . Thanks for the info

Great project documentation! When I saw the bare frame on its side... I knew it was serious!! I would have found or rented a small truck crane to lift that engine/transmission into place! Or a 10,000LB forklift with hook attachment. Engine cranes scare me even on a small block V8 alone.

Axle - I am not 100% sure. If you look at the pics from the day I got it it had already been converted to 4WD.

Clutch master - I have it set up as the 93 master and slave, but will be swapping it to a South Bend unit as I changed the original Con OFE to a dual disk and I have concerns with the old stock one with that plate load.

Firewall is pretty much the same minus a few small things on the wiring connector/wiper motor. Nothing that needs major hacking. Splicing the frame can be done as well, but other than needing a few new screw holes and a adapter plate for the wiring harness, it is easy.

Funny. We started with the tractor. Back end kept lifting up! ;)

BWAAAA HA HA HA, the early pic of the frame going down the driveway... . looks like it was trying to get away, like a puppy from a bath!!!:-laf:D I love it!! Great job on the whole shebang. I'm sure glad to see more than a hubcab coming out to the hub... . Did they carry two spares?;)

Also, do you have many miles on the Gear Vendor? I've had hell with mine, it doesn't do well with pulling a trailer, it seems. I try to change the oil every 10,000, and it drains glitter out every time... . The first one was in it when I got it, and it lasted about 25K before it completely quit, and this one only has around 20k on it, and the last 5-6 times I've changed the oil, it's not been pretty.....

OK on the Frame , Im trying to reframe from welding in a mount for the Clutch Master cylender . I thought about a 94 to 99 or so master cylender since they bolt on , the later ones are adjustible . But no one has yet to answer my question ( parts houses included ) that can tell me the lenghth of the push rods of a 93 unit and the later units .

If there was both on the shelf it would be easy to tell does any one have this answer or work some place that can look and measure it ?????? I called South bend , no help there either but said " measure it then we can fix you up " Thats no help you cant measure it in the truck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What ever happened to the old style manual over under drive aux. boxes you used beable to buy they never had any issues ? Plus the second stick in the truck was fun !!!
