I know from experience that you couldn't build it for 10 grand. Too bad it was in the PNW for so long, all that rain and salt water. But still, fix the leaks clean up the rust and some other minor repairs and you would have a great truck. A few personal touches and... never mind. I really don't need another four door :-laf Shadrach

I can honestly say I thought about it too for at least 2 minutes! It would only need... . and I have that already..... ;)

Amazing how clean the bumpers etc are!

There was a 1992 4X4 Cummins powered Crew Cab for sale several years ago in Southern Alberta. It was a 3/4 ton with a 5 speed. Shadrach

OK. Time to get this back up and running! Been doing more working than posting, and if I want to get it done this decade, that is a good thing! :D

Lets see, we left off with removing the head and getting it ported, decked, valve jobbed, and it came back. It looked like this remember?

#ad

And the motor?

#ad

Well, things continued! :)

After I got the head back I had to pull the cam and install the new one. That was step one.

So head was removed already, I had to open the gear case, and pull out the cam.

The dowels hold up the tappets so they do not end up in the oil pan. Once the cam is out they can be dropped into a trough that is inserted into the cam tunnel.

#ad

#ad

Cam is out so tappets and dowels are removed:

The cam gear is swapped over to the new cam, and it all goes back together! As for Cam, it is a Colt Stage 3, and I used 24V tappets.

Once the cam is in, the head needs to go back on. I pre installed the ATS manifold for ease of manifold installation. That HT3B s in the way of tools:

Next, clean the block deck:

#ad

Install ATS fire ring head gasket:

#ad

Collect fire rings:

Install fire rings:

Install head:

#ad

Next install valve train and torque ARP head studs:

#ad

#ad

Rocker assy:

#ad

Set specs at 8 and 18:

#ad

Assemble the remainder of the motor:

Next was set timing at 18* advance:

Err, wait. Missed a step. Find TDC. Tell helper to push on pin and when it pops into cam gear yell. Once it pops in ALWAYS remove it ASAP. NEVER leave it in.

Helper: Gotcha. No problem.

I go under truck, start barring over motor... ... . helper pushes on pin... ..... click... ... . OK!!!

I stop.

Me: All good?

Helper: Were in!

Me: Ready to go backwards?

Helper: Ready to go!

Me: OK!

We back off and watch the dial drop. Zero dial. Go back to TDC. Crank crank crank.....

Me: We there yet?

Helper: No, did not click yet.

Me: Did we pass it?

Helper: I think we did.

Me: OK, lets go back and try again.

Round 2:

Me: Press harder this time!

Helper: OK Jimbo.

Me: Watch the crank damper, if it passes the line, you passed TDC.

Helper: OK.

Crtank crank crank on the ratchet.....

Helper: OK! We passed it!

Me: WTF do you mean we passed it?

Helper: We passed the two marks!

Me: Did the pin go in?

Helper: No.

Me: Well why the hell not?

Helper: I dunno.

Me: OK. What are we missing. Hmmm. Oh *****. You pulled the pin out at TDC right?

Helper: No. I forgot.

Me: (&%$^**%# and (&%#%) you had one thing to remember! Stupid ^%#@%&* tree stumps and *&$#%&..... ;)

Well, maybe not that much... ;)

Me: Crum. The cam has to come back out.

Helper: Looking at the issue says plastic pin. We can get it. He makes this, heats up the metal, sticks it in the back of the cam gear when at 7:00 and melts it into the plastic!

#ad

Me: Freakin brilliant!

Helper: I know.

Two days pass... . Get new timing pin... ... install pin and retaining star washer... .

Round 3.

Set timing, this time to 18*... .

#ad

#ad

5. 3 mm lift for a CPL 2174 is 18*.

Well, I also put the box back on. After 30 some odd hours of hitch mount fabrication and welding, it was ready to go to paint so the box went back on for the time being:

The next thing to do is front air bag lines. I had ripped the ones out that I had in there as the exhaust will need to go there and I did not like how close the lines were to it. After my recent melting likes when 3000 miles from home, I decided to relocate them.

As I also want to rebuild the T case as I found out it has 3x the mileage I originally thought, I decided to put the truck in the air to make the job easier.

This is the first time I put it on the hoist. 24' long truck on this type of hoist scares the stink out of me. So I thought what the heck! Lets try it! :D

And that bring this thread current! Oo.

Now that deserves the phrase,"I'm Lovin' it!!" Nice limiting straps, :-laf

One thing, though. Since you left the banks twin ram intake red, why not paint the valve covers blue and white? Or white and blue..... maybe four of 'em blue and two white?? Or all blue with white stars? Just curious... . :D

You do know that it would have been a lot easier to change the cam when the engine was out of the truck? :-laf Shadrach

I had never put the truck on the hoist and I almost ripped the bags off! ;) I kind forgot that they dont lift with the truck! I started lifting and thinking boy those bags have travel. Why are they not lifting yet? :-lafn Managed to get those to work but there has got to be something available that is better than two straps connected to the hitch!

I have thought of doing all the covers red to match..... will see what happens and where it goes. I already had the covers powder coated when I machined the covers for the ARP studs:

Oh stuff it! :D

The cam change took close to 15 hours. Some of it was never having done one before, the other half was trying to get the cam out of the block without cutting the rad core. I did end up doing a little persuading with a hammer, but at least I did not have to cut it! ;)

For those that are doing a cam swap on a first gen, have a zip cutter ready, or remove the rad core. It is not a pretty job. :(

We will have none of that on this side of the border please.

Maybe red and white with a red maple leaf.
