I replaced my tranfer pump and injection pump 30k ago so I know the syptoms of an injection pump going south but what the heck is going on now? About a month ago my check engine light came on and I took it to my regular mechanic (not a specific Diesel guy) and he told me that they worked on Cummins all the time as he did a lot of small fleet work. He checked the computer and it gave him a non specific fuel problem so he traced down some bad O rings and injection line leaks, repaced the fuel filter and then we replaced the transfer pump. This cleared the check engine light for about 100 miles and then it is on again. The engine runs at idle fine, starts hot or cold like normal, drives around town fine but on the freeway after about 30 miles you can feel the engine cut out cylinders and lose power and then slow to about 50 in 5th and slowly the RPM fall until they get to 1100 RPM and then all cylinders kick in again and runs up to cruising speed again and then cylinders drop out starts the cycle again. Then I tried not going on the freeway for a couple of days and the check engine light went off until I did another 30 miles or so on the freeway and the cylce starts again. The mechanic doesn't have a clue. He wants to replace the injection pump. This may be right but the symptoms don't sound right to me but what else could it be. Could the computer be scewed up?
