Issue- want to know if air intake heater is working. I know the indicator light works- comes on after starting truck and then goes off when system does self-check. But I've never seen it come on when i turn the key over and wait to start. At what temp should this air intake heater do its job and illuminate the wait to start light? So fer have only started trk with temp near 40 deg F.

will have to check the service manual(thats out in the shop) for sure but I thank its just under 40 when it comes on

the heater systems work on the crew cab but the light does not (bad heat control box) you can here it it when it comes on and the alt will palse after started if it was on

Your heaters will come on at either 18*F or 59*F depending on the build date of your heater controller. The early ones came on at the 18*F point and had some starting issues in colder climates. This is called out in the 89 Deisel engine supplement to the service manual. The manual gives the serial number break point for the change in heater control programming.

Second that Paul. My 90 never has the wit to start light come on (living in the Southeast) since the weather rarely gets below 18F, but even in the mid thirties it doesn't like to start.

On my 93 the wait to start light comes on every time I turn on the key. But if the temp is above 59 it never turns on the heaters. Below that it will cycle the heaters as it needs to.

I can add my experience here, or at least tell you what my truck does. The "Wait to start" light comes on in my '92 every time I turn the key, some times very briefly, other times (when it's cool in the morning it'll come on and remain on for a number of seconds. When it turns off there is an audible "click" and I start the truck immediately. I noticed one recent morning that my alternator was pulsing as 83 crew cab points out.

The weather is just now cooling down here in Central Calif, and I've only had my truck since the second week of Sept. The first time the light/heater worked kind of surprised me, but it wasn't anything I didn't know about as I had read my owners manual, and of course spent some time at the TDR. :)

FWIW, I totally agree with the consensus here, the manual says that when working properly the heaters start to come on at/below 59*F.
