Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Walmart Oil

I would like some advise please.

As you can read from the siginature, I have a 2001 HO stock truck, with the six speed transmission. I have serviced this truck like a religion. The only part I resent is the lack of being able to find standard (read non-dealer) oils and fluids for this truck. I am able to find oil, power steering fluid, trans fluid, but no rear differential fluid for my truck. The manual calls for thermally stable 90 gear dope. Now I can find all kinds of 80w-90 but not any thermally stable 90 weight. Is this all that imporant or is it a money making oppurunity for the company and the dealer ? What do you guys think ?

I forgot to add one other thing to my previous post.

What do everyone think about using Walmart 15w-40 diesel motor oil ? Anyone else using it ? Yes I know, I'm tight but if it meets the engine specs won't it be just as good ?

It's probably made by a major oil company. Try reading the fine print on the bottle to see if you can find who makes it.



It's probably fine but why pinch pennies when it comes too something as important as engine oil in a $30,000 truck?

I have been told that the SuperTech brand is made by Quaker state. I ran it in my old 92 CTD and it had well over 250K when I sold it. I have been running Delo in my 02, I get 6 gallons at Costco for about $34.

I only use Oil I buy from WalMart, of course, my local one carries Shell Rotella T, a durn popular Diesel Oil.

True Story

When I worked for Toro who makes Lawn boy two cycle mowers they had a rash of engine seizures in the lawn boys. Investigation revealed they were mostly sold at Walmart and they all blew up at some short interval, like clockwork. Further investigation revealed they were sold Wally World 2-stroke oil and the oil was inferior. Yes, it met the TCW-?? spec but it was crap and it did indeed cause the failures, which were reproduced at Toro.



I was not directly involved with this but I believe this is true. I would stick with major brands. I would steer away from no-name brands because they may just be the stuff that wasn't good enough for the manufacturers own brand.

Super Tech (or Wal-Mart oil) is the same thing as Texaco/Havoline. (1) I had a buddy that worked at Wal-Mart and did all of the Automotive ordering (2) the local Texaco fuels distributor told me (3) take a whiff of the two - exactly the same - nothing like Quaker State.



There's nothing wrong with the Super Tech products, you're just not paying for a name. I used Super Tech 10W-40 in my old 360 gasser and had no problems - but now I've got the diesel and I love it more so I feed it Shell RotellaT.

Chevron Delo 400 15W-40 is a top quality dino oil - available at my local WalMart. Why spend $5000+ for an engine option and quibble about pennies for the oil & filters that protect it?

Up until recently, maybe in the last 8-10 months, the SuperTech oils were being made for Wally World by Pennzoil/Quaker State. I do not know if they are still producing the oils for them, apparently not?

Differential fluid & Wal Mart oil

I've been using Valvoline Blend 80w/140 as I tow with the truck and this is what DC recommends. Didn't need to add any friction modifier but you may with another brand. I think Dodge sells the modifier.

As for the Super-tech oil... I was very tempted at one time. It's rated right up there with the other HD diesel oils and is the cheapest you can buy. Some stores have the 2 gal containers at a really good price. If you changed oil and filter every 5000 miles and doubt if you'll have any problems.

For example... if a person buys two less 20oz bottles of pop or passes on McDonalds once in between oil changes... then you can justify getting the Delo400 at $6. 30/gallon.

I have been using Pennzoil 15w-40 Long Life for over 15 years and have no complaints. I think as long as you stay with a good name brand you will be ok. I worked in the auto repair business for 11 years and I have seen what inferior ( junk or cheap) oil can do to an engine. We paid a lot of money for these trucks and I think it unwise to jepordise the motor over a $2. 00 savings heck you can barely buy a cup of coffee for that. Just my 2 cents worth.
