Hi all,

My wandering problem is so bad it's like driving a Tug Boat on a choppy sea.

I'm thinking about installing a "Steering Box Stabilizer" as well as a new Borgerson steering shaft. Any of you think this might help?

Also, as my truck has near 130 K mileage wise do you think I should do the Ball Joints while I'm in there?

I love this website, the wealth of knowledge here is invaluable.

Happy Trails all... thanks.

I went with the DSS (similar to the BD set up, DSS came first) and a 3rd gen track bar conversion on my 2001 and it tightened everything right up. Has been very nice for the last 1. 5 years

It is a crying shame that Dodge has known about all these problems with steering & lift pumps & they don't really have an answer or don't really care. Their answer to the lift pumps was a joke of an in tank pump & I don't think they have any answer for the bad steering except that is the way it is suppose to be. We spend a lot of money buying these trucks we shouldn't have to spend a lot of money rebuilding & reenginering these trucks, just my 2cents. Sorry for venting.

I have the DSS steering stabilizer, Borgensen shaft, and the 3rd gen trackbar. The DSS, and the 3rd gen track bar made the most difference. I did the track bar and shaft at the same time, but when I pulled my old shaft out, it didn't seem that bad. A couple years later, I did the track bar. If I were to do it again, I would do the track bar and DSS, and take it from there. As far as the ball joints, if they are OK, no need to replace them. You won't be tearing the front end down that far. It will drive better than new, once you're done.

You can check out your track bar by having someone turn the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the frame end of track bar to see if it pulls away from bracket. ( Mine was pulling away at 185,000 but handle like it always did. I replace it with a Thuren 2nd gen trrack bar at 190,000)

Just replaced ball joints a 209,000.

I believe Genos started stocking the Thuren track bar.

My front end is tight and aligned properly but still had the subtle wander. Constantly correcting when at highway speeds. Just today, I installed the BD box stabilizer. I can't believe how much it improved the steering. No wander at all now. I'm sold !

I did the Dss, Ball joints , etc. ( Steering original 90K )
Than The Trac Bar conversation,
The Trac bar conversation made the biggest Difference.

I did The Dss, and the 3rd gen trac bar. Those both did improve the truck steering. The truck handles so much better and no sway out of the frontend on curves loaded or not. The best improvement when it came to giving the truck much better feel and control was the 'Rock Solid'. My steering wheel felt like it was out of a 1949 farmall cub! (I know because I have one) It was all over the place loose and would make all kinds of noise. I did it myself and was amazed at how little was holding the whole steering shaft in place. Now it is "Solid" no vibration, noise or worries.

I'd absolutely recommend putting on a track bar if you haven't already. This is the number one issue for these front ends. Then the pitman shaft stabilizer (aka DSS), ball joints are very likely needing to be replaced at 130k.

Do the Borgeson last and only if you pull your shaft out and find it is loose. A Borgeson shaft is not cheap and I bought one before I pulled the stock shaft and found out my stock shaft was perfectly fine.
