If memory is correct a 2 micron fuel filter is best. . right. Do I just replace OEM or still use as a stage 1 filter.

Several guys have installed a remote filter head with a two micron filter between the stock filter housing and the CP3. I did so by simply removing the rubber line just before the CP3 and running two new hoses to the new remote filter head, one in, one out. You can buy a kit to do this with but I found it less expensive to source my own stuff. The Caterpiller 2 micron is what I use on the remote and the NAPA extended drain filter in the stock housing which is 7 micron I think.

Godspeed,
Trent

My son has an 06, 5. 9L, he is using the following filter and pump arrangement. He has the factory filter and in tank fuel filter by passed and has installed the Air Dog 150 Fuel system.

Here is a link for you to review. AirDog Original

The filter and pump come in two sizes 100 GPM and 150 GPM, the filter is a 2 micron filter with a pre-filter that has a water separator included.

On my truck which is an 08, I am using the standerd 5 micorn filter for my pre-filter and a 2 micron filter down stream of the 5 micron filter.

Jim.

What are you looking to get from the 2 micron filter? I use the OEM replacements from Geno's and have 212k on my engine with no issues? To each his own, just wondering. Thanks

The Wix (NAPA) is actually 8um absolute (lower than stock specs) and its unknown to what level it separates water. I generally recommend against using this filter.

Its well documented that OE filtration isn't up to Bosch specs. Your 03 came from the factory with a 10um filter, and Bosch wanted 5um. In 05ish Dodge upgraded to a 7um filter, Bosch still wants 5um. So most folks want to at least meet the Bosch specs or exceed them.

Better filtration leads to longer injector life. At 212K miles on OE injectors you are doing great, and well above average life expectancy for stock filtration.

Lots of good info here. I am also wondering about installing a dedicated water filter as well. Pros/Cons? I have as yet had any water problems, but you never know when Murphys law throws a wrench at you.

I use the 7 micron filter from Geno's in the stock fuel filter canister, and a 3 micron FASS/Fleetguard in my FASS system. The FASS also has an effective water separator and pre-filter on it.

When I was having issues with my Fords I installed a 10 micron primary and a 2 micron secondary filter system on the frame... very easy, and inexpensive to do... . we change all the filters annually, usually with 40 to 60K miles on the filters... . at the time we winter prep... etc...

Even thought the 10 micron has a water drain we've never had the need to use it (so far), we're into something like 7 years into this system and have now installed it on our larger engines in bigger trucks... .

We started this with the Fords when we were having injector problems... to date, with 600K miles on several trucks (total mileage) we've yet to have a problem and our problem Ford finally went the last 200K miles I owned it without and injector problem. .

I truly believe that the care and custody of Diesel Fuel in this country is going to the dogs and most people who transport it, care for the tanks etc. . just don't care much... that's 5 cents worth on the subject. .

There are two air vents in indentions on top on of the tank that I still believe are responsible for letting muddy water and dirt into the tanks. Seems this would be a prime culprit for early lift pump and injector problems. I have noticed a lot of the replacement pumps coming with pre screen filters now. I put fuel lines over the two vent nipples with inline fuel filters and put the ends into a hole in the trucks frame. At least the tank is sucking filtered air from inside the frame instead of through a bunch of dirt and muddy water on top of the tank. Maybe over kill on my part but after reading about several finding sludge and what appeared to be muddy water in their tanks back in 04 I did this for piece of mind and so far so good.

Just a reminder that the FASS 3um HF6604 is 3um multi-pass on hydraulic specs and the single pass fuel specs are unknown. Also, if you haven't upgraded the f/w sep in the last 6-8 months it really isn't a f/w sep at all, fleetguard didn't build that filter for f/w sep the drain is for sediment and there isn't any water stripping media in the filter. FASS recommends the FS1000 as the current f/w sep, the Baldwin BF1212 is also a great choice.

just replaced the filters on my fass,i installed a FS1065 seperator, its a 10 micron stratapore, according to cummins parts book, with a wif sensor and a drain, had 1HF6604 left, will upgrade it next change.

I have looked at that filter before and like it. It appears to be a FS1000 with a WIF sensor.

How do you plan to wire the WIF sensor?

i have the male plug i salvaged from an old ISL harness at work and a female plug that will plug into my factory plug, kind of an extension harness.

OK one more question. With 2 micron filter between primary filter and injection pump does the air bleed out of the system to same as now? Turn switch to on and it fills the filter and I have no idea how the air gets out but it starts right up on all six.

Thanks Again

Yes it does, but you have to prime it an extra time or two. . Which on a third gen is very easy. All you have to do is bump the starter, which is only long enough to get the starter to engage, but not start the truck. Wait until you hear the lift pump quit and do it again. I have always done it 2-3 times and never had it been an issue, and that's with 3 filters.

Good, I like to keep things simple... .

I went to car quest today, they can not look up a Baldwin 2 micron fuel filter for me. There books dont show how many micron for each filter, now I was wanting to get a Balwin. Can any one give a good # for the filter I need? They said if I know filter # they can figure out a base for it, unless someone has # for that to.

Thanks

DDT

Its very simple.

Donaldson P551313 is the filter you want, 2um and a 1-14 filter head will work. Do not run the Baldwin BF7533 cross, its 7um.
