want bigger dually tires

how big of tires can i put on my factory rims without rubbing?

I have a new one comming and the tires are butt ugly. :--)

I have 235/75/16 on my 97 and when fully loaded there is about a quarter to half an inch between them, thats with about 70 psi in them.

Tire Size

I've been doing a lot of looking at tires lately as it's time for a new set for my duallie. My 4x4 (2000) came with 235,85,16's on them, which I know is bigger than they used to be. Most places I've talked to (and there are many!) won't go any bigger than that without putting on spacers, and some places don't even want to do that. The solution that most suggested was to go with a more aggressive tread pattern, adding height in rubber rather than air.



The solution for me is that I'll be putting on a set of Rickson 19. 5" rims here as soon as the tax refund comes in. With those, I can go up to a tire that is 33 3/4", as opposed to the 30" of my 235's. It's not a cheap solution, but there's a price to pay to look cool!

Tire Size

I'm running 255/85/16 BFG Mud Terrains on my 97 4x4 and haven't had any problems. I haven't towed any real heavy loads with it, most of that is done with our other truck that has the real engine in it ,but I have not had any problems rubbing.

I also ran 255-85-16 BFG MUD TERRAINS on my '95 dually and it didn't have a "real" engine either... . (V10). Ran with a 1/4 inch spacer between the rims. No problems with them rubbing. I pulled an 18' car trailer with my pulling truck on it,along with all my gear (gvw truck/trailer 16'000#). They filled the wheelwells nicely.

I'm running Big O 255 85 16 ATs with no problem. I've got about an inch between duals. I had a flat about a month ago and they still didn't rub.

dont know what they will be exactly

does anyone know what i will get????



after seeing a new one on the lot last week I think i want bigger tires



i had some bad luck with BF goodrich last set

couldnt balance them so i am not sure what kind of tire i want

I am running 255/85r-16 Coopers on my '01 without any spacers. I have no rubbing when carrying a 4000lb camper and towing 4500lb trailer. I do however run at full inflation pressures.

My 2001. 5 with that option came with Michelin LTX's. They've been pretty good for me in 22k miles. They aren't offroad tires by any measure, but do pretty good in the snow and light mud. I'm pondering some 255/85's for when I wear these out. . Though I don't want MT's. I wish BFG or Procomp made that size in an AT.

I was looking at a 2wd 3500 with 235's and it had a gap about 3/4 " up top unloaded. My tire guy says you have to check loaded and on the bottom of the tire. Is there anything negative on using the spacers?

old designs were fine

I put the new style 35" BFG A/T's on my wifes 92. They were used to replace the old style 33" BFG A/T's. They balanced up perfectly using very little weight on A/E 589 rims. The new style rides completely different than the old. Now that old rough riding truck rides smoother that my car. However it looks like the old style would handle higher weight loads better, but thats ok since this truck is just a daily driver and horse trailer towwer.



Back to the subject of 255/85-R16's for the duallys, check out Cooper. They offer that size in three different tread styles from a tame a/t to a full m/t.

I am currently running the SST's, which is the mud tire, siped and studded, as the winter tires on my dually. They give me about a 10% overdrive effect over the stock size tires on an '01, which works great with the 4. 10 gears. I also ran these same tires on a '97 V-10 2500 carrying the same camper as listed in my sig. so they can pack the weight (although I much prefer carrying that load on a dually, much, much safer).
