I bought my truck used and it has a k&n cone type air filter on it.

I asked at the local napa about a paper cone type air filter and basically that turned into a game of them not being able to find anything if I can't give them an air filter.

I am currently debating my options for other aftermarket air filters but I figured I better ask and see what if anything I might need from the original air filter setup since I don't have any of that stuff.

If you had a k&n air filter would you keep it or replace it with something else?

To some extent my concern about the air filter comes from reading too much about how k&n filters may cause some problems when run on these trucks.

AFE is supposed to be the best!

I had it on my 03 and liked it a lot!

Lately, alot of people are saying oiled filters suck and we need a paper filter.

For my 05 i willprobably buy an S+B intake from www.autoanything.com. but that is my opinion and others will chime in shortly!

Can a napa filter be used in place of the K&N? I would like to know, that's what I got yet would like to keep the intake tube.

all the brands of filters like k&n are the same type of filter's just different name's. these filters are just an oil soaked cotton/gauzed type. or you can go back to paper but i don't remember seeing a coned paper element anywhere.

Well... is their any thing really wrong with the K&N... ... It is what I have always used... on 10 to 15 trucks over the years... ... but I am very opened mined... . trucksalesdave... ... . central Georgia

If you have the part number from your set up (k&n) then you can go to the link below and cross reference it to find the AMSOIL Ea Air Filter that is made for it. THese are by far the best. While your at the site read about the EA filters and then do research on others. Research before you buy. I am a firm believer in the EA Amsoil filters. just my opinion. I can answer any questions you may have just let me know.

Do a search! An article I read on here I think maybe on BITOG shows that the ONLY filter that flowed more air and trapped as much dirt as the STOCK filter was the AFE. I'm gonna stick with the stock setup. NAPA filters are good. IF you are still in warranty I would stick with MOPAR untill the warranty is up.

I replaced my K&N with a n amsoil dry filter mentioned above. I saw dust with the K&N and I have seen none with the amsoil filter.

Many of the "Aftermarket" filters will flow more air, but you need to be concerned about how much dirt they will filter out! Efficiency and Capacity are much more important than airflow.

High Flow Cold Air Intake

I have been using the Scotty 5 for over 3 years now and its great. This filter does not make any more noise then the OEM Filter and does add a noticeable Mid RPM range power increase. Scotty Systems is now out of business, But I now www..klmperformance.com still has 7 Scotty 5's and 1 Scotty 3 available.

I don't have any problems with the k&n that I actually know of. I just have read too much about "dusting" engines and am debating what the future of my truck holds for mods and what not.

Warranty is toasted, so no concerns there.

I don't have the cleaner and oil for the filter, so I am figuring out if I want to replace the k&n or buy the stuff for cleaning and oiling it.

If I could find a napa paper filter that would replace the k&n and leave my tube and stuff in place I would do that. All I found when messing with napa was "canister" shapes that most likely won't fit.

I know in some engine swap thread on one of umpteen sites I read and post on I saw someone had the napa filter I want. But running searches has gotten me no where and messing with napa got me to a brick wall. Plus the time frame was 6+ months ago when I had no concerns about taking notes while reading about truck mods.

I am out of town this weekend but I will find time to check out the links and info in this thread when I get back and have some free time.

Thanks for all the responses.

As I said I don't know if the k&n is a problem and one thing I plan to do when I get back from my trip is pull the filter off and see if there is anything in the tube behind the filter and what not. For now it is dirty and I don't mess with stuff before a trip because I always have problems if I do that.

Spoke with a gentleman fueling his CTD at a service station in Bozeman MT. Mentioned he just got a new motor under warranty and felt he was pretty lucky as his K&N setup had trashed his engine. I have a K&N on my Jeep Wrangler but would never use one on my pickup.
