Want to replace FCA

I have read a bunch of threads on this. I hvae the long crank time, rough idel but otherwise good running. Truck has 95k on it and recently had #4 injector replaced.



So where is the best place to buy this part? I don't suppose it is as easy as going to NAPA. Are there any tricks to replacing it? I read three torx 25 screws and that is it.

Its an easy replacement...

Funny, when I got my 05 I thought it was an 06 thing cuz my dad had it on his 06, flash fixed it.

Yeah I had it done also, it was my "excuse" for getting the latest software.

FCA = Fuel Control Actuator.



It's a fairly simple little valve (of sorts) that is attached to the back of the CP-3 (injection pump). You can see it yourself if you stand on the driver side of the truck and peer down into the cavity between the fan and the intake horn, you're looking right at the CP-3. The black cylindrical thing with wires connected to it is the FCA.



The ECM (Engine Control Module) decides how much fuel to send to the pumping chambers in the CP-3 based on the demand fuel pressure. It signals the FCA to open or close as necessary to achieve the demand rail pressure.



Flow from the FCA that is not sent to the pumping chambers goes to the overflow valve (cascade overflow valve on the CP-3 itself). The overflow valve then regulates how much fuel is used to lubricate the CP-3, and how much is sent back to the tank via the drain.

If you want a little more juice tho, $150 from Floor-it diesel. They take a new FCA, cut it open a little for ya. Worth it IMHO

Hey Guys,



I just read in the latest copy of the TDR mag. that the faulty FCA could be the cause of the infamous "Spark Knock Like" rattle some of us 2006 CTD owners are experiencing. Can anyone else out there verify this??



I have had this rattle since about the time ULSD fuel came out, but havn't found a consensus that the fuel causes this noise.



I have been using 8oz. of PS and 8oz of MMO in each tank of fuel for about a year. This added to the fuel did quiet the noise down initially. Lately however, the noise has returned.



I would happily replace the FCA if some of you have found that this eliminates the "Spark Knock"

My '06 has the rattle too, part of what I am trying to cure with the FCA replacement I may get up to the Cummins dealer Tues. , Wed at the latest, it's 60 miles each way. I'll swap it out the same day and let know if it helped.

The FCA didn't cure the pinging (spark knock) in my truck... that was cured with injectors.

Hey BHolm, any feedback on the dealer FCA trip/fix yet??



I am planning a 4000 mile trip and would like to hear back before I leave. I keep hearing injectors,injectors,injectors. I only have 15,000 miles on this truck.



Steved, I can understand a high mileage, hard used truck, might need injector work, but if so, how the h--l do you get a dealer to agree and fix the problem before it becomes a catastrophic falure???
