Want to switch to Evans NPG+, but do I have coolant problems?

I ask because my reservoir bottle is slimy on the inside. There appear to be little drops of oily stuff in there.



The coolant is NOT green anymore. It's closer to brown than green.



Now, seeing as how I've never had the truck past 32psi, I think a HG is unlikely. There's no coolant in the oil at all (no creamy emulsion).



I don't *think* I have oil getting into my coolant, but if I don't what is this slimy stuff (that LOOKS like oil) and where is it coming from?



I'd REALLY hate to swap in some fancy ($27/gal) NPG+ coolant, only to see it also get oily and filthy in no time.



Any help you can offer is appreciated. This is that factory OEM coolant-- 40K on it like the rest of the truck.

EDIT: as additional info, the engine coolant and engine oil levels are holding steady. Neither seems to be disappearing.

Mine looks about the same. I think I topped the overflow bottle with some orange long life at one time, and chalked up the slimey stuff to that - but maybe its just general purpose slime. Getting ready to clean and flush. Also have about 40K miles.



If I look into the radiator the coolant is still green. Don't know why the reservoir seems to turn colors and slime up.

Don't forget that the overflow bottle is not a sealed system.



Everytime the engine heats/ cools, the fluid level raisies and drops. This causes air to be displaced out of the tube. Well, it sucks air too. So, any bacteria, fungus, mold, ect can and will get sucked into the bottle.



The overflow bottle is the radiators P trap.

I just put NPG+ and new T-stat in mine 2 weeks ago. I waited longer than I should have to do this, 222Kmi. , I also flushed with HD rad. flush, which for mine was a waste, as it was clear all the way. The OF bottle had a small amount of scum, but wasn't bad, flushed it with Dawn dish soap, and cleaned it real good. I had the NPG+ in my 00 also, and it worked real good. Make sure and use the Evans Non-Equeous Post-Drain Prep Fluid, they didn't have it when I put it in my 00, at least I didn't know about it. I Talked to Al at Evans, he has an 03 CTD, and he gave me step by step directions for the change, and was real helpful, 631-209-9560. He also told me to go to a 7# Rad. cap.

The temp guage in the CTD's must be like the oil press. guage. My new Juice Attitude monitors the water temp. , and it shows a lot different that the OEM temp guage. Mine, when not towing, the needle lays right next to the 200* mark, and does not move, while the Att. shows 190 to 195* at 97* ambient temp.

The thing that concerned me was the black slimey stuff that was not only in the overflow bottle, but it was on the rad cap underside, as well.



So, I get to thinking this may be a case of the Water Wetter that I like so much not being perfectly compatible with the OEM green stuff.



So I called Redline. I asked them if this stuff was some kind of precipitate from the WW and the OEM coolant. The tech said that WW can, indeed, cause this exact type of black oily stuff in the system.



However, it precipitates at lower temps. Once the temps come back up, the stuff will go back into solution, and all is well.



So, the oily stuff I saw in my cooling system is harmless, and is a byproduct of my Water Wetter usage.



It's good to know that I don't have major cooling system problems.



Now, for the NPG+ conversion!!

Crap! Their "Prep" product is $24/gallon! I think I will just flush it best I can, try to get all the water out, then "hot purge" to eliminate water.

I've been running Evans in my Ford with a "0" pressure system fo about 30,000 miles with no problems. I flushed it with distilled water twice, and added a coolant filter. I'll probably do the same with the Dodge. Jeff

What is the coolant filter you spoke of? Is it a brand I could read up on to see if they have an application for my Dodge 2004. 5? I would like to have a filter setup on my coolant .

Hohn, why the switch to the Evans if you don't mind me asking. Did the regular coolant and the Water Wetter do anything for ya?



I am planning a flush and fill real soon on the puller obviously the water temps are through the roof after a pull so I am looking for any advantage.

Is there anyway to completely drain a 6bt without turning it upside down. I would love to run npg+. But I would also like run a higher temp thermostat. And Evens really suggests emptying the whole cooling system of any fluid.

Headshot zot, if you use the Evans Non-Aqueous Post Drain Prep Fluid, you will get about all the water out of the block. You use it after you get done flushing, it is heavier than water, and forces the water out of hard to drain areas.

Here's what it says on the jug,"Evans Non-Aqueous Post Drain Prep Fluid, for absorbing water from a cooling system that has previously used a water-based coolant in preparation for installing Evans NPG+ waterless coolant. "

It is heavier than water so it gets to most of the places that water could accumulate.
