I am getting quite frustrated with rice burners and SUV's piloted by soccer mom's cutting me off and slowing down when I'm towing. It's like I got this great big invisible sign that only these drivers can see that says: "Ooooooh, look at the big red truck with the huge trailer. The sign on his door says we can pull in front of him and go slow. Let's do it Johnny, he'll stop"

I don't want to frighten anyone, but it gets annoying when I follow the rules of the road and dip$hits like that drive around like they're in pixie dust land. What are the best buys and easiest to install. TIA

John

"I don't want to frighten anyone" Yeah right... ... This is the very reason I got mine and they do a very good job of frighting people when they pull out in front of you!!! The Hadley Bulleys are a very loud horn! You will love them trust me!:D

If you really don't want to frighten anyone the grovers or hadleys are not for you. I have seen the effects of these horns on unsuspecting motorists and I have to say there are times now that I'll intentionally "let it go" because I worry that someone may crash (mostly into me) due to the horn.

I have made people drop cell phones, spill drinks, and swerve out of their lanes with mine. Don't get me wrong they all deserved getting the horn honked at them at the time, but there is no doubt in my mind that saying that they were "not frightened" would be inaccurate.

As far as the best buys if you have the time to go to a big truck salvage yard you should be able to pick up the pieces quite cheaply. I got my horn and one air tank for $25. Then I ordered an electric valve but I don't remember how much that cost. At that point I could use my horn by filling the tank from my shop air. A little while later I found a guy on EBAY selling Thomas air compressors and bought one with a pressure switch from him for about $60. Figure maybe another $20 for air line and wire and a relay and I guess I've got about $105 + whatever that valve cost in my system.

If you don't have time for the salvage yard thing then I believe JCWhitney has a pretty good set at a reasonable price. Ricksons and Camping World both sell air horns too.

Good luck,

Mike

Spilled drinks, huh? It wasn't coffee was it? If it was did they sue you cause it was to hot? I actually don't care if I give them a shock, because they've just caused me to ruin a pair of underwear and my wife is making noises like Freddy Kruger just popped onto her lap. I am very disturbed at the number of people on the road who don't pay attention to what is around them or ahead of them. Since I've been towing, I can empathize with truck drivers.

I installed the Hadley Bullys last month. They cetainly are effective at scaring people. :D :D I purchased mine from JC Whintney. Definately a worthwhile accessory.

Well, there's three good reasons to get one.

Eric:D

Once with my Hadley's I made a lady shove her lipstick up her nose, and she deserved it #@$%! :-laf . I bet she puts her makeup on at home now. I also made a guy pee his pants when he tried to j-walk in front of me.

I too am very careful in using it. I once pulled along side my friend on a six lane freeway who was engaged in deep conversation with another friend and I blasted the air horn. He swerved into the other lane and nearly caused an accident. I apologized for my stupidity... that was about 10 years ago. I don't play around like that anymore, but I do not hesitate to use it to warn idiots, neanderthals, and especially women putting on their makeup and weaving in and out of my lane.

Yes, after experiencing the pixie dust phenomena towing, I have much more respect for truckers having to put up with it day in and day out. One of the sweetest driving moments I've ever had when one of these pixie dust addicts pulled out in front of me (I wasn’t towing BTW) and a cop saw it. I had to brake hard to avoid hitting her. In less that 5 seconds, the cop had her pulled over, jumped out of his patrol car and was making BIG jesters at her. From anger to delight in seconds. It's an emotional war out there and we usually loose. I was thinking of putting a BIG bumper and winch on the truck to see if that helps. Probably not.

Just do it.......

I got some Grovers from a truck salvage yard. They were $40 each. Put em on both our rigs. I like the deep tone of the Grovers better than the Hadleys. But it doesn't matter which just do it. It has saved me from wrecking several times. And the best part is the entertainment value is endless!! :D :D

I have a school near my house and the mom's dropping their kids off just make U-turns in front of anyone. Needless to say now when I pass the school all the kids yell for me to toot the horns.

I used a cheap tire inflator compressor from Wal-mart $10 and a pressure switch and tank from J. C. Whitney $60. Been working great for a while now.
