Well this was a day as a parent we all would like to not have happen. Earlier today I had to scamper out of town on business early and unknown to me imagine what I find as I try to re-enter my neighborhood. I turn onto one of the main roads going towards my house where my daughters middle school resides,its about . 5 mile away from home,and was greeted by the local fire police and told I was to leave the area and use the other way into my home. As I look up the street I can see the local bomb squad truck and numerous police and fire personnel. I arrive home and call the school and was informed the students were in a "code red" lock down due to a "package of unknown orign" was found. I had asked if the children were going to be dismissed and was told no they were not in any danger and would be resuming class soon.

SPRINGETTSBURY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A York County school had a scare after a suspicious package was discovered on a basketball court.



An explosive team was called in after a gift bag was found at York Suburban Middle School.



Police looked inside and saw what looked like a bomb. The school was locked down as the explosives team detonated the package.



"They looked at the remnants, and at that point they made the determination it was a hoax device, a look-alike device," said Lt. Scott Laird, with the Springettsbury Township Police.



Police said they have no suspects. "



The person who did this has gone way below any form of humanity in this universe and to do this at a school where innocent chlidren are is showing some of the true sickness in this individual. I am very upset in how my local school board has handled this situation and have logged a complaint as have other parents and will keep my daughter home tommorrow. I can only hope they catch the dirtbag who did this before one of us do... ... ... . Andy

What about the way the school board handled this has you upset? It appears that the school put the children's safety first as they should have done. Are you upset that the your daughter wasn't released to you during the time that bomb squad was on school grounds? I would imagine that hundreds of distraught parents would have only made the situation worse for all parties.



BTW - I don't have children if that matters to you.

This is standard procedure during bomb threat. We just had one last week at our little podunk middle school. Teachers found a suspicious box in the basement of the school. They evacuated the school and called the fire dept. It was just a spare part for the water system of the school. The maint man put it there for replacement earlier that day. I think your school handled it right, you can't realease all the kids to there folks during this kind of situation, like NVR said. Try to imagine 2500 parents with there cars, running around the school honking there horns and screaming for their kids! All this while the bomb squad and the police are trying to diffuse a bomb and exacuate all the kids.

Yes the school officals did the job they had to as making sure the children were safe. This incident happened in the early morning, after homeroom,and lasted till after lunch. The kids were kept in lockdown the whole time which was good.



Here is where my problem comes from,when they determined the school was "safe" enough for normal activities to resume why were they not sent home then to make sure no other problems were found. This is a fairly large school,it houses 5th thru 8th grade, with alot of ongoing construction, and way more places to hide stuff than can be searched in a 4hr time frame. The children,once the area was deemed safe and clear(when the "suspicious package" was detonated),should have been cleared of the building for the day thus allowing a thorough search of the building and grounds. Just my thought as a concerned parent and I was not the only one who felt that way. Was gambling with childrens lives that nothing else was on the grounds worth not making up a day of school??. Just a thought... ... ... . Andy

I guess it could have been much worse!



The memory in the childrens mind will continue to be a problem for some the rest of their life, every child will handle this differently... ... ... . Please pay close attention to your child and talk about it if she wants too.



I have been thru this in a way, there was a movie made on a real life seniaro that happened in Cokeville Wyoming, only difference is the bomb was real and the bomb went off while all the kids in the school were gathered in one room with the bomber, thank GOD that nobody was killed other than the bomber himself, there was like 30 kids total ( I LOVE WYOMING) and this was K thru 6 I think. Some got burned pretty bad but all lived. Some of these kids are scared and some are scared inside for life.
