I would not have joined this debate except for the comment of Champane Flight about empty talk, which some of it may be.

This is not empty talk. A few days after 9-11 I bought a new 9mm semi auto pistol and two extra 15 round clips. 9mm= NATO standard = find your ammo on the dead bodies around you. I'm shopping for a good Remmington Model 600 in 223 cal. 223 = NATO standard = well you get the idea. I turned 67 in May and after 50 years of three packs a day can't run, can't walk very far very fast but I still have a steady trigger finger. I wear bifocals and can't see the rear site and the front site clearly at the same time but can still hit the 10 ring often enough to do what is needed. One pistol, the 22 with the 12 inch barrel has a scope and do the other rifles. I served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps in the Korean War, it was no dam conflict unless you consider an alley knife fight a conflict. My Father was in the Army, brother in the Army, son in the Army, grandson in the Army but I forgive them. At least they served.

What is the likelyhood that I will be called upon to defend my neighborhood against terrorists? Very small. Will I be ready? Don't pop a cap in my neighborhood unless you really want to know.

As we have said in other threads "be aware of your surrondings. " I keep myself aware and ready. Our constitution recognized the importance of a well armed militial and gave me the right to be one of their number. I elect to do so.

In the days after 9/11 there seemed to be a great deal of attention paid to the FBI and CIA, there numbers and mandates for doing their individual jobs. It is my hope that the executive office has with the blessing of congress issued sweeping changes to the powers of the FBI and the CIA to control crime and terrorism within this country and abroad (without our knowlege). What does that mean to me, a bullet in (place extremists name here) head without a great deal of political wrangling. \

What that would mean to our liberties... ?? I don't know, but it darn sure would be proactive and better than a nightly body count of servemembers from some country none of us would care to die in or for.

my . 02

I dont want any of our troops to die either but.....

Most of the people who are in the military chose that route. They have to realize that this decision could mean they could go to war at some point in time and possibly lose their life(why else would they train them with guns). If my country needed me to fight I would. I have over 70 guns and know how to use them quite well, including some that are capable of tiny groups at 800+ yards.

I whole-heartedly agree we need to erase the people we should have in the 90's. It is just to bad politics have blinded so many in this country. Sometimes you need to do what is right for the whole despite stepping on some toes in the process.

My . 02 for what it is worth

Joe and Morph,

I'm sure your right, I build cabinets for a livin', I'm not by any means, a military tactical advisor. However, if I was, I'm sure I'd figure somethin' out, just may step on a few toe's doin' it tho. One thing for sure tho, the political correctness has gotta' go.

Dodgeboyz, if that is what you have to fight with that's great. I prefer a rifle. Just don't turn the other cheek to these terrorist, they don't believe in political correctness. Do you remember how the British thought that the Americans during the revolutionary war fought like cowards, because they used gorilla warfare? Guess what it worked, even though the British had superior numbers we kicked their ass. If the British would have fought fire with fire we would still be a British colony. We will either learn quickly to fight these terrorist using the same take no prisoner tactics (and using even more fire power) or we will suffer the consequences. My only hope is that we are doing this in a very covert way so the liberals don't stop it. We need to let the soldiers, (I perfer to think Marines :D ) fight this war along with the CIA and FBI and get the politians out of the mix. JMHO

Im just saying I may be a bit left, but I am all for taking care of this problem,I have never served, and I am to old now,but my brother and my father bother served in the Marine Corp. and I understand we need a fighting force to be top notched.

My word to you is that not all liberals are trying to sweep this under a rug or turn the other cheak,no one likes war,but we must defend the constitution and our children and our country. I guess I am not your typical liberal if I am one at all, sure I believed in some of Bill Clintons views but I also agree with O Rielly he makes a lot of sense.

I am tired of the fat cats getting fatter on my tax dollar, and the little guys gets the shaft,we can blame that on both sides. And it just sickens me to see the shape of our armed forces, who do we blame for that, well I guess we can blame Clinton for his cuts in the budget for this,I don't know the answer, but to me republicans stand for big money and big profits, the rich get richer so to speek. I don't think if Al Gore were president he would be handling this any different than Geo Bush is doing.

People blame Jannet Reno for not taking action on these corporate Exec. making millions on the weak, but do you think John Ashcroft will either?

The answer I believe is no. Anyway enough out of me I have rambled enough for one day.

Not all liberals are pigs, like all republicans are not facious pigs.

Flame away;)

You Guys Blow me away

9-11 happened because our government let it happen.

You want to send the military somewhere? How about Washington D. C. ? That's where our worst (visible) enemy is.

Our nation continually asks to get punched and when it happens we all act surprised.

Turn of the TV. Radio is no better.

Hate to tell you this but you sound just like ME. I don't consider myself a liberal or a conservative. I'm an AMERICAN, served in the USMC and worked a job since I was 15 years old. Had to go to night school to get my college degree. Nothings ever been given to me and I've never expected or have wanted any handouts. I guess the problem these terrorists have is that there are more people like you and me in the USA then these terrorists realize, and we are their worst nightmare :D

I know,it just makes you so darn mad at them you just want to go take care of it yourself. Something has to be done,I think soon since we are still vulnerable to these animals. The problem is we don't know who is with us and who isnt with us. You have to watch your neighbors, just like you have to watch strangers in your neighborhood.

You know my wife and I have been concidering having another child, but it scares the crap out of me what a new child would have when they grow up. What will be left for them. . I wonder:(

Dave,

I have confidence in this country. We have been thru a lot as a country so I think that we will survive. Longest lasting government in the world. I think this freedom and right to shoot off our mouth whenever we feel like it is ground into us. We will survive this mess with a few more scars and be tougher for it. It won't be easy.

I've just got to tell the story about "five mile corner. "

Five mile corner is just that a highway intersection five miles west of Holdenville, Oklahoma. Before and during WWII there was a honky tonk at the corner. It was a pretty popular Saturday night place but it could get a little rough at times. One Sunday morning during the early part of WWII the regular bunch of farmers, ranchers and oilys showed up at the one and only cafe for coffee and gossip. Ole Zeke was there eating his breakfast and it was obvious that someone had kicked the daylights out of Zeke. He was beat and batterd, black and blue all over. The boys asked him what had happened. Ole Zeke told them that he had gone to five mile corner the night before and a few of the good old boys had taken offense to some infraction of local etiquette and stomped him pretty good. Man that's terrible they all said. No, no Zeke told them that's good. How do you figure it's good they asked. Well Zeke said, you know there's talk about the Japanese invading the west coast. Well, if they do they may make it. They may even make it inland aways. They may even make it over the rocky mountains but I'll bet you anything you want that they will never make it past five mile corner.

I've got my suspicions about our lack of apparent speed... I bet our D. o. D. is just waiting for resupply from the various factories that make the bombs, bullets, and beans. The budget cutting, and $-trimming began with Gramm-Rudman-Hollingsworth in the mid-80's and got worse during the Klinton administration... . now we gotta buy a lot of new stuff that goes "boom" and "bang", due to depleted inventories... . at least it'll all be nice and fresh :)
