I would not have joined this debate except for the comment of Champane Flight about empty talk, which some of it may be.
This is not empty talk. A few days after 9-11 I bought a new 9mm semi auto pistol and two extra 15 round clips. 9mm= NATO standard = find your ammo on the dead bodies around you. I'm shopping for a good Remmington Model 600 in 223 cal. 223 = NATO standard = well you get the idea. I turned 67 in May and after 50 years of three packs a day can't run, can't walk very far very fast but I still have a steady trigger finger. I wear bifocals and can't see the rear site and the front site clearly at the same time but can still hit the 10 ring often enough to do what is needed. One pistol, the 22 with the 12 inch barrel has a scope and do the other rifles. I served as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps in the Korean War, it was no dam conflict unless you consider an alley knife fight a conflict. My Father was in the Army, brother in the Army, son in the Army, grandson in the Army but I forgive them. At least they served.
What is the likelyhood that I will be called upon to defend my neighborhood against terrorists? Very small. Will I be ready? Don't pop a cap in my neighborhood unless you really want to know.
As we have said in other threads "be aware of your surrondings. " I keep myself aware and ready. Our constitution recognized the importance of a well armed militial and gave me the right to be one of their number. I elect to do so.
