Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Warm temperature, cold start, sputters?

For most of the summer now, when I go out in the morning or any other part of the day and start the truck, it sputters and blows white smoke for about 20 seconds. This only happens when it is warm enough for it not to cycle the fuel heater. When the air temperature is colder, enough to cycle the fuel heater, the truck does not sputter at all. I have also noticed a slight drop in fuel economy. The sputtering seems to be getting worst as time goes on. Otherwise drives and runs normal.

Any thoughts?

It might be the fuel lines getting bad. If they are letting air into the fuel that could cause the sputtering. Not sure why it wouldn't do it if the grid heaters come on though.



Late timing can cause a cold engine sputter also.

My vote is for the fuel lines also. My truck did the same thing as yours on startup. If you do change the fuel lines, get the marine grade ones. The wall thickness on the marine ones are 3x that of regular fuel lines.

I had about the same problem this summer. Ended up replacing the drain on my fuel filter, it was leaking and letting of the pressure.

i had and sometimes have the same problem with my truck but its alot better once I put all new Bully Dog injectors in it then had the timing checked and corrected becuase it was later than it should have been but since then i just wait for the wait to start light to go off and give a little gas when i turn the key and then push the pedal to about 1000 rpm for a sec untill i can let it idle then i take off and she spits a little black smoke as soon and i leave the driveway and she clears right up and i have no troubles from there.
