Needing a new motor...

48re Tramsmission noise

Hey yall,

i can’t find what I’m looking for. Few uses ago in my 4th gen had someone post about putting my transfer case in neutral and then putting truck in drive to help warm transmission when really cold. Truck was a 2wd so couldn’t do that.

Any use in doing this or just driving s slow and easy for first 10 minutes?

I did that on -30°F mornings with my NV5600, but I’ve never felt the need with auto’s and ATF. ATF is thin enough that I don’t worry about it, I just try to drive easy when it’s really cold.

Thats where I’m at with it. My work is right off a major highway so you get on and then it’s 70. Most days I drive down the service road for 10-15 minutes and then flip around to head home so in the winter it adds time to going home but when I’ve been leaving work the trans temp is 34* and takes a fair bit to warm up.
Thanks for the reply. I’ll just keep doing what I’ve been doing.

Just give her about 5 minutes to warm up with high idle, then get on the highway with enough break in the traffic to get on without going right to 70 MPH. Allow yourself a bit a time to get up to speed and the temps will respond well. As @AH64ID has mentioned, the newer fluids have been a big game changer for our trucks, albeit, harder on our wallets!

The autos handle cold much better than the manuals, even with good synthetics a cold, sub 0°F, NV5600 was hard to shift.

The auto programming also won’t lock the torque converter if the fluid is too cold, so they warm up quick. I wouldn’t be worried about getting up to highway speed early into the drive.

MOPAR Winter Front always a help.

Not just trans, but drive axke oil and suspension grease, etc, need time & miles.

Tires don’t equalize in pressure for close to 90-minutes. Etc.

Engine Oil temp is my first mark (200+). After that it’s in having devised a trip plan meant to enhance best operation.

Go to farthest point first and work one’s way back to starting point. Use a highway to do that even if miles are farther.
