What about Winter Oil?

I too, have a very short commute nowadays (4 miles).

My concern is oil. I've been running Rotella since my first oil change. Trouble is, I can't find it in any other grade than 15W-40. Does Shell manufacture other grades? Can I run this stuff all winter? Days below 0 are not uncommon here and I can't always plug in.

Thanks all.

David

When it is cool i start my truck and let it idle for a short time and then I use a piece of yard stick cut at 7"1/4 to push the go peddle and she runs at 1100/1200 till I am ready to go to work. 5 mins or so. A cold day here is in the teens and those are few and far between. Some folks here keep there truck plugged in when it gets in the 30s.

See Ya

Lighter weight oil the way to go!

Having tried straight 15W40, semi-sythetic 15W40 and full synthetic 15W40, it does not compare to the cold weather performance of a 5W synthetic (good diesel oil). Much quicker oil presure, cranks much faster and these I belive make all the difference when trying to use these trucks every day in temps below -20.

Mobil makes a very good 5W40 (Delvac ??) and Amsoil makes a 5w30. This will be my third winter using the Amsoil 5w30. I have collect oil samples every 6K for the last 180K miles .

It really works and it is just fine in 100 degree days also.

I recently seen Cenex (MN, ND, SD, WY ??) regional oil/fuel company now has a 10W30 and I think 5W40 diesel semi-synthetic. Never used it.
