If you look at the kit Warn designed for the newer jeeps this appears to be do-able.
They have taken the #2 approach in DuallyDean's post. A new spindle that bolts where the unit bearing was, and replaced the outer ends of the axle shafts at the u-joint.
There may be more to it than I realize but I think the main reason they won't do it is because they don't feel there is enough interest.

Big E, DuallyDean and all:
The #2 approach might be doable, and I'm sure Warn's concerns would be the weight of a truck w/ Cummins weight, the space available at the unit bearing area, and the R. O. I. (return on investment).
It would take a lot of sales to even up the engineering and mfg. score.
If they are successful, they should sell the units to Dodge to fit up EVERY 4wd off the line, properly returning to manual freewheeling hubs, and making their numbers.
Believe me, being an Engineering Operations and Design Manager, I have spent a little time contemplating this little problem.
Kind of makes me want to hang on to the '92.
Let Warn know the desire and need.
G'day Guys.

I'll take the loss in fuel economy in return for having the components (ujoints and diff)
always turning and lubricating the bearings.

Costwise, fuel used versus parts replacement and labor works out about the same, but the truck isn't in the shop for a day or two having everything torn apart and put back together.

I know of three Dodge Diesels in the area that had the front axle u-joints go bad (rust coming out the u-joint caps) in under 50,000 miles. #ad
I really wonder if having them rotate constantly makes them last any longer than having locking hubs and locking them in once every couple of weeks. #ad

Fellow Dodge 4x4 drivers - I have sent off my request/letter to Warn and have received the following reply:

Marty:

I will forward you e mail on to the hub team for consideration. Your input is always appreciated.

Thank you,

It may or may not do any good but I tried. This may be a good time for those that are interested, to email Warn asking about a hub conversion kit for 1994-present Dodge Ram 4x4.

Thanks for the link, Old School! I kind of lost track and forgot about this thread but I just visited Fritz's site and looked over the project. I'm curious to know what the total bill was--Dave is careful not to mention what it was. Maybe I'll call Dynatrac (I could use a good laugh!) I am aware of that company due to my hobby (o. k. , obsession) of 4-wheeling, and when it comes to Dana axles, Dynatrac is pretty much the last word.
Dave mentioned our quest for locking hubs in the article, and he reminded me of a couple of things I hadn't considered:
1) the OEM axlehousing will never be as strong due to the CAD housing splice.
2)the difficulty of retaining the ABS--not a problem on my '94 3500, never had it!
3)the Ford caliper would be a big improvement over the marginal OEM single piston unit. Maybe it would be less prone to the brake pull many of us deal with?

Keep your fingers crossed, guys. Maybe Dodge will come to it's senses and return to stout iron when Ford takes away to much of their market share...

I found the answer. The Free-Spin from Dynatrac. This link should work.

I sent an e-mail to them the other day but have not heard back yet. When (if) I do I will re-post the info.

You did realize this thread is over 6 years old right? :-laf

There are already a lot of threads on the dynatrac kit... and a lot of guys already have them...

To all who want to get rid of the present axel spindle setup that is on the dodge.

for the 91-98's(?) Dynatrack makes a replacement spindle with regular timkin bearings that will eliminate the shift fork and give you a real free floating axel with lock out hubs and even make better axel shafts for the front end. They are expensive but worth it. Go to their web site and they will explain it all.
