With all this talk of group purchases and what-nots, maybe we should ban together and get Warn Industries to make a conversion kit so we can have locking hubs on the front end?

I have now contacted them 4 times since July 1998 and have received the same answer "We don't offer a kit and have plans to make one in the future". If it seemed profitable for them, maybe they would consider.

I would be one of the first ones on the list! I think that Chrysler should have continued to offer them through the years. Just think- better economy and no gearlube spewing out of the front differential breather after a long highway run. #ad

If enough people are interested I could send the wife down with a printout for this thread since their office is right down the street from me #ad
. I would like it for the mileage, wear-n-tear on front end parts/tires and 2 wheel low. I think they would steer better also.

Ill take a pair as long as they are very strong and dont break with the hard use I give them.

I wish you guys all the best in your quest for a conversion kit from the existing '94 and up 4WD front axles.
I would imagine the "kit" would come in two boxes.
The 1st would contain the manual locking hubs.
The 2nd box in the "kit" would be about 6 ft. long and weigh about 375 lbs. It would contain a Dana 60 full floating axle/differential assembly with brakes.
The 1st and 2nd boxes would make up the complete "kit".
Unfortunately in '94 Dodge went the same way as GM did in the early '80's with the front axle fully engaged for 4wd trucks. Ford has the only true manual locking hubs available.
The '94 and up Dodges have splined axle ends, mated to the hub, and use a single bearing on each end. To reverse engineer this design for manual hubs would be next to impossible. All hats off to the company that could pull this off.
Dave Fritz on his site has done an excellent retrofit of a real axle with manual hubs to a post '94.
Good Luck in your search guys.

Old School--

UPDATE: Where can I find Dave Fritz's website, I want to take a look at his handiwork.

I have, for quite some time pondered this delimma also. I came up with 3 senarios, and none look too cheap.
1) Research the dimensions of a Ford Dana 60. If the outer knuckle pivots on ball joints like the Dodge and the center to center spacing matches, we might have a shot. This would get you real spindles and hubs. If the same series u-joint is used, the short side (drivers)inner axleshaft could be reused, mated to the Ford outer shaft. A new long side shaft would have to be sourced, unless the spline count and shaft length matched from the Ford.

2)If none of this works, it might be possible to machine a spindle that bolts to the stock outer knuckle in place of those stupid non-serviceable unit bearings. (I am a machinist by trade, you should see the custom narrowed Ford 9" Full-Floating rear axle with Toyota disc brakes and hubs/lockouts I built for my '83 Toyota #ad
) By taking spindle dimensions from an old W250 or W350, the hubs, rotors and brake calipers (if different) could be used (and they'd be all Dodge parts #ad
) The W250/W350 outer axleshafts should be able to be used, and most likely the short side inner shaft, but again, the long side shaft needs to be sourced.

I wish I had access to the dimensions of the old W series axles, as well as the Fords. It seems to me that this should be doable.

3) The third option, which is probably the easiest but most expensive is to swap a complete Ford solid front axle under the truck. It would require little more than cutting the spring perches off, and welding the required brackets for our trailing arm suspensions on, and possibly a hybrid drag link.

As you can tell, I have been thinking about this for a while. The reason is because the stupid central axle disconnect hasn't been engaging fully and now it jumps when in 4WD. The spline ends and coupler are rounded over enough that I most likely have to replace them, and I'm not sure I even want to know how much that costs. It might be cheaper in my case to find a good used axle.

Anyone else have this happen to them?

DieselDually: You are on target. Here's the link to Dave's outstanding project: http://www.ecpe.vt.edu/~dfritz/Ram/4X4/DYNATRAC/front_axle.htm
This will help the post '94 guys understand the constraints and design of their existing axle assembly, and the upgrading to a manual locking setup.
Regards.
