I just noticed that my new truck (see sig) is starting to rust on the front and rear bumbers. This truck is not even 6 months old yet. I took it to the dealer and they are ordering new ones, no questions asked. The service manager just shook his head and said, "oh my god, this is just the begining"

I was under my 92 Dakota last weekend changeing the diff oil and noticed the bumper is badly rusted on the inside. Looks like only a matter of time before it comes thru. I wonder if spraying WD40 or something like that on the new diesel would prevent this from happening?

Yeah, I just noticed a little line of surface rust on my rear bumper below the license plate. I was able to rub it off, though. I was pretty surprised by this, and I'll really be watching it.

I had some surface rust on my rear bumper after last winter. What I did was in the spring I use some Eagle one polish that I have (it's like a fibrous cotton material - comes in a black can) and removed the rust easily, made it look like new. Then I just sprayed those areas with some clear coat paint from a rattle can. All those spots that I had repaired still have no rust allthough I now have 4 or 5 new spots this winter. I'll do the same again in spring.

When I noticed signs of rust on the inside of my bumpers I removed both, sandblasted and sprayed with undercoating. On my project cars I treat the inside of the bumpers with clear POR-15.

Firedup, I'd ask your dealer to work with you to treat the inside of the new bumpers. A real thorough job could be done before they are mounted - but it sounds like you're talking about rust on the outside. I hope the replacements have a thicker plating since it sounds like this may be a problem.

Firedup, POR-15 is a rust preventive paint-like product. It comes in seim- and gloss black, silver, grey, and clear. Check out http://www.por15.com/ for more information.

i had the same thing happen on my 98 , they replaced the rear bumper , i'll have to look at my bumpers before it goes in tomorrow , if there is rust they will be replacing them .

Here is a tip I learned on rust preventative maintence from a few old timers:

Spray/Pour oil or diesel fuel (I use drain oil) on the inside of the door panels, cab corners, door sills, and basically any other place you can put it.

As far as the bumpers go, I think taking them off, sandblasting, and painting the inside is a great idea. I have to do that before they get too bad.

Also, insted of undercoating, I've been using that spray on bedliner in a can. When it dries it hardens completely. It is a little more money, but if you ar only doing smaller areas the cost isn't a big issue.
