Lovin' the signs... . he he he he

Yeah, I can relate to a big gate... . We've got twin gates at the front. Usually one is closed, the other open if I want visitors..... It's 1624 yards from my Mother's cattle gaurd on her yard to the first pipe on the one on the highway..... :D That's a loooooong way's to come OR go if you have crosshairs on your head... ...

My personal favorite is one I used to have on my front door... . It's got a USMC Lance Corporal, sitting, taking aim with his M14. Below it, it says, "IF you can read this, you're in range. Have a nice day. "

We have half of a watershed that belongs to us and the other half belongs to a homeowners group that has a subdivision on the other side. My pasture fence divides the levee in half. I have all kinds of no tresspassing signs but they don't seem to work. What does work when I catch people that have climbed over the fence and are fishing on my side, I walk down and politely tell them that I would love to let them fish on my side but my insurance angent won't let me since I am raising Bucking Bulls. They all know we rodeo and that there are cattle on the place, but are clueless as to how tame they really are.

Yep, at our previous place there was a subdivision next to us. A few of the kids in the subdivision would climb over or go under the fence to fish our stock ponds in the pasture. The cows and calves being curious about the strange people would come towards them. The clueless, being afraid of cows, would run for the fence and the cows and calves would follow. After a few occurrences, the word got out about those "mean" cows. :-laf and the problem disappeared.

They didn't know how tame those cows really were. We could walk up to any of them and scratch their backs. :D

Why do you have him on a dog leash? Our insurance said that IF YOU DONT HAVE IT POSTED FOR DOGS and they bite then you are at risk. If you have it posted AND WE DO they are forewarned.

He is on a chain (covered with coolant hose)... Spokane county requires it, even on your own property. Our home in Spokane is adjacent to the "Dishman Hills Wilderness" area, foolish hikers know no boundaries. Fritz aggressively approached a group of hikers crossing our property to enter the back side of the DNR reserve, their little boy was frightened, fell down and scraped his knee, that's when all the fun began(can't wait to leave this state behind). Fritz has a 8' x 16' covered kennel with a house within when we are not home, when we are home and outside he is by our side unencumbered, or inside watching the telly with us.

Our insurance told us the opposite, if you post it, you know the dog is dangerous!

Here is a link to our property in Spokane, I believe you can see Fritz's Kennel behind the home in a few shots.

:-laf Solves that problem

That will work!

Put a dog chain on that Moose that is shown in one picture and name him "Killer". :D

Or "Bullwinkle"... .

I've never seen a Moose used as a selling point before by a realtor... . :)

I just missed a big bull moose standing in the road the other night while returning home from Houlton with the big parts truck, wife was with me yelling "Moose!,,,Moose!".

Told her to stop worrying, I had weight enough on to withstand the hit and not get derailed.

She seemed to doubt me... ... ... ... . :D:D

They are out in the road at all hours licking the calcium road treatment off the pavement.

US Route 2A is nothing more than a big ol' salt lick for those things. They will be down on their front knees lapping away and they don't really care to move if they can help it... .

Beautiful place and setting - is the listing yours, or from when you bought it?

Mike.

Another reason the "Fritz" has to be restrained at times.

It's our listing, we purchased it in 1988, Thank you for the compliment. Trying to build our new (smaller) home in Thompson Falls, on some property we purchased 5/6 yrs ago.

X2 on the great looking place!!! (I didn't only look at the moose)... :D

Mike. :)

Thanks, takes some doing to keep it up, we try.

Nice Place JJ

Its ALLOT of work to keep up on things up here. Calif you could work on things YEAR ROUND. Here you have a short time or must like the cold to get things done. Winter is pretty tough to do any digging, ground is like concrete 5ft deep so planing ahead for things is a must.

The Picture of our drive if you look at the end of the road there is a little lighter color area that is where it makes a left turn to go to the house if you go straight on past you come to a cul de sac like place that we use to let people park and save 5 or 6 miles of hiking to get to the same place. But even thou I put out trash cans and would empty them seems like people just like to throw it down and it blows to my yard. So we closed it down and let only people that we know back there to hike,cross-country ski or take a horse trailer and start their ride from there. Don't like being an A** Hole but dont like being taken advantage of either.

My uncles got a "slide gate" that runs off a chain and sprocket and runs parallel with the fence. It opens and closes regardless of snow conditions as it only has to push snow as wide as the gate which is 3 inches or so. Hes got a sign that says

No trespassing.

Violaters will be shot

Survivors will be shot again

:-laf:-laf

Have to give that a thought I was looking at the swing of the gate. I got plenty of room for it to slide just have to worry about power to make it slide the COLD like Bill said REALLY TAKES IT TOLL ON BATT'S Its not like it would be open and close a bunch of times a day sometimes we dont go to town for a week and never leave the place FIL and BIL walk to our place from theirs and SIL walks across the Hwy to ours.

Thanks for the Comp Big!

I hear what your saying, our nature hikers have no problem leaving their garbage behind, including dropped cigarette butts.

That's the one, saved it in my picture library.

I get trash from across the highway every time the wind blows... . An old man sold his farm to a "business man" in Denton, and he put 115 trailer houses up on the stinkin' thing... . Straight across the highway from my farm ground. Luckily, my house is far enough off the highway, it's not too bothersome, but I still usually pick up several trash bags every 6 months or so from my fields and pasture. Chaps my 'bama when I drive up and a calf is chewing on a plastic sack..... Really love it when they let their dogs out, too. :{ I've gotten a bad reputation for shooting 'em. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt the first few times, but the third time I catch them chasing cows in MY pasture... ... Well, lets just say there are several unfortunate reasons the county deputies know me very well... . :( There have been several incidents where the poor pups got shot while their owners were watching. I've been sued for it once, too, but the judge was quick to throw it out on lack of merit. There is a leash law in the county for a reason..... :( And it really pisses me off that their owners make it be that way..... :( Sometimes I wish I could just beat on the owners until the dogs are better taken care of.....

A few months ago, there were several trash sacks thrown over my fence off the county road to my West..... I found them checking fence horseback... . I tore one bag open, and the address was on the bills and papers inside..... I not-so-politely returned the mail to it's owner, (conveniently, they live in the trailer park to my South about 2 miles from there), leaving it conveniently scattered on their front porch, yard, and car so they could sort through it a little better..... :{ Why they gotta be like that??!!?!?? :(

We used to have a large German Shepherd - my favorite breed - and asked our insurance agent about posting warning signs as to "Beware of Dog", and the agent advised against it, stating that a sign like that can be used in court in case of an "incident", to prove we were negligent in knowingly putting visitors at risk by keeping that dog around...

So the NEVERMIND THE DOG, BEWARE OF OWNER sign works. :)

We dont have to much of a dog problem up here STRAYS are shot as pests FIL and BIL dog come over to play with our dogs but thats family Im kind of glad they do come over they have shown our city dogs that coyotes are not BUDDIES. We have lost a dog to the yotes he just could NOT get it thru his head they are not regular dogs. We get people up from bigger towns that for some reason think we want their dogs and drop them off and drive away those dont last to long doing that.

The trash has pretty much came to a halt sense we stopped people from going up the drive. About the only trash is when animals get into the trash cans and you would think that folks up here would know to make a raccoon proof enclosure for their cans

We sometimes in the spring let the mules and cow out in the front pasture but seems everyone stops and wants to feed and pet the mules. Our gang are kind of Leary of others and stay away, had a girl climb over the fence and we drove up and asked what she was doing? She said that the horses have such pretty long ears??????????????????????Earl my snot rocket king seen me talking to the gal and wondered over. The girl was wearing ALLOT of perfume. Earl for some reason doesn't like the smell of sweet things, flowers and most of all PERFUME. As the girl was petting the horse with long ears???????????????????? (still dont get that one) Earl's nostrils started to flair over and over Penny knew  what was about to happen and took cover Earl launched a ICBM of a snot rocket perfect in the girls face :-laf She asked why did he do that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My guess would be he took offence to being called a horse ITS A MULE STUPID GET BACK OVER THE FENCE!!!! cant you read the sign on the fence NO TRESSPASSING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Sheriff stopped and thought it was a BEAR JAM (when people see a bear they stop and cause a traffic jam) he got out of the patrol car and asked where's the bear at BIG? No bear and the girl turned toward him :-laf:-laf Earl's aim is getting better!!!!!!!!!! He escorted the girl and the spectators off our property.

I purchased the gates. They are Priefert lightweight tubular gates made here in Mount Pleasant at the Priefert factory. http://www.priefert.com/ProductDetails/gates-264/economy-gates-47/rg16 I wanted light weight gates that won't "pull" the gate posts over (been there, done that) and also have much less wind drag on the openers during high wind conditions.

I purchased the gate opener at Tractor Supply. It's a Mighty Mule Model FM502 with a 20 watt solar panel. http://www.mightymule.com/gate-openers-fm502.htm I had the opener professionally installed by a gate/fence contractor. I followed the contractor's advice and don't use the little 12-volt sealed built in battery that comes with the control box. I use a group 24 marine battery instead. It lasts much longer and is less affected by cold weather and it has enough reserve campacity to continue to operating the gate after several days of cold cloudy weather. The contractor installed a 20-watt solar panel instead of the 5-watt that Mighty Mule sells.

My wife really appreciates the electric gate opener after having to get out of the vehicle in all kinds of weather to open/close our gate at our previous place for over 18 years.

Bill

Thanks for the link Bill got some good info from the gate maker. Son is looking to find a different way to make some low cost fence that would stand up and look good. Found some on the post you gave for the gate people. We can get Peeler Logs cheap and they are treated the picture is what he is going to do. Im running short on my drill casing fence post and want to save what I have for ME. But the Peeler log looks good and the 1 1/4 inch Galvanized fence rail isnt that bad cost wise. Just need to talk to GHarman about welding Galvanized pipe with my Welder. The muffler shop in town said that they can bend the pipe to form the ends of my gate they have done it for themselves its light cheap and holds up great in the MT winters. I think that we might put the fence across the front of our property to make it match the gate.

Like yours my Gate opener said she's getting a little tired of getting out of a nice warm car to open the gate when its -0*

Hey BIG, 6010 or 6011 rod will work good with galvanized. Its better if you grind it off first, but not neccessary. Just turn the heat up a tad more than you would normally run for whatever size electrode your*running (probly 3/32 for pipe). Then if your worried about makin it look purdy you can cover the 6010 with some 7018. I would highly suggest wearing a respirator with cartridges if your going to be welding alot of it, you can become very sick from over exposure of galvanac fumes. High fevers, nausea, dry/sore throat, then youll start hacking some nasty ***** up outta your lungs that youve never seen before. And thats just the short term effects:eek:
Almost forgot, theyve got galvanic paint it comes in gallons and even spray cans to cover up the welds and whatever you may burn off to keep from rusting.

Was wondering about the need of installing some sort of plug that the ends of the galvanized tube slides OVER to make the weld I seen some on a site while I was surfing that Im going to get for the gate ends to make a round framework of the gate top and bottom, ends. For the gate horizontal ribs and vertical supports the muffler shop said they can crimp the ends flat to make a nice place to weld the cross points together.

On the fence its not like anyone can be standing on the fence part because the galvanized pipe would bend for sure but would make a nice solid weld point if they dont cost that much. The galvanized tube welds can be hidden within the post holes to hide them slide the 20ft or longer if I can get them top rail in and weld

Man, nice looking fence... .

You'll want to paint your welds, though. That's where they'll rust through. I've welded a LOT of it around windmills and pipelines, and they always rust through where you weld it if you don't paint 'em..... Unless you're in gyp water country, then they'll rust through wherever they feel like it... . :(

Lots of gates and openers available out there. I use J & I Mfg, a local pipe and hardware dealer in Oklahoma. They beat everyone's prices, but I'm not sure how you'd get it up there... www.jimfg.com

Great Plains Industries is the wholesale division of Northern Tool, where I have an account set up as a distributor. I used to sell a lot of their tools and stuff until they opened a store about 30 miles away. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/category_farm-acreage+fences-gates

Then there's Gempler's. THey used to treat me right. I haven't used them in years, but they used to have good prices, good products, and excellent service. I left them to go to Great Plains, as I could get the stuff a little cheaper... . http://www.gemplers.com/gates-accessories
