My original factory liftpump died at 14,500 miles. I had the dealer replace it under warrantee. The replacement pump's output was about 2# less than the original, about 14# idle, 12# steady running, around 10# @WOT. But otherwise fine. [I don't know the part #'s]

Well yesterday morning the replacement pump died, with only 18,400 miles on the truck. So the replacement was good for only 3900 miles!! The pressure started to wander all over the gauge, then fell off to zero. No performance changes from the engine. The pump is running, just doesn't make any pressure.

So: a warning to those who check their fuel pressure only occasionally with a mechanical screw on gauge, this may not be often enough. [Although any check is better than none. ]

I thought that the replacement pump was good for 10K miles at least, so I was procrastinating about installing my pusher pump. Needless to say, I installed it yesterday afternoon.

[With the Ostrich approach, ever notice which part of the anatomy is up in the air?]

I still haven't decided whether to go back to the dealer to get the pump warranteed. Anybody know if the pumps are still on back order?

Good Luck!! Greg L

Greg, you will get the same lift pump from cummins as you get from Dodge. Mine went out last week with 110,000 mi on the engine. I have had a fuel box on it since 50K. when mine failed there was a very noticeable difference in engine performance. If I turned up my box for example the engine sputtered trying to get enough fuel. It had a big loss in power. Stared and ran fine if you drove like grandma. Check your gauge. Dave

Update

Well, it seems that if I feed fuel to the factory lift pump, that it will slowly decide to come to life and add additional pressure to the supply from the pusher pump.

So when I started it this morning, I had about 8 psi from the pusher pump. After I left the farm and got down the road 1/4 mile or so, the gauge was pegged to over 16psi. It would only drop to about 14-15psi under WOT.

So right now I have a healthy pusher and a sickly factory lift pump. But between the two of them, I have 16+ psi fuel supply.

Dave D: I did drive like a Grandma! I didn't want to starve the VP44. So I babied the truck till I could get home and mount the pusher pump. I did verify my pressures with a mechanical gauge, just to make sure I wasn't experiencing a gauge failure.

So once I get back from work next week, I may see if the local dealer has a lift pump in stock, and get it warranteed.
