Our work truck is a 97 2500 4x4 5 speed. When the temperature gets below about 25* the truck shudders under braking like the rotors are warped. It stops when it gets warm outside. Any ideas?

Does the pedal get hard and do you have ABS? If so it sounds like the ABS could be activating. I had the ABS activating at low speed and it shook the truck like you mentioned and it turned out to be the front sensors were dirty and this happened w/o turning on the ABS lamp.

The abs light is not on right now but it was a while ago for a day then it went out. Where are these sensors you're talking about?

for the front sensors, s/b right behind the rotor and under a small tab that is part of the dust shield,at least on my '01 2500, easy 1 bolt removal. I cleaned the sensors themselves and the tone wheel which takes a little patience since the access to the tone wheel is small and I went completely around the circumference. The rear sensor s/b in the rear dif on the top as it is on my '01 but I'm not sure on the '98.

I wish my ABS light would go out. It has this thing when it hits -20F it turns on and stays on forcing me to take it to the dealer to reset, altho one time it was a bad rear sensor. I like the idea of having 4-wheel ABS but it has been nothing but problems for me.

My 97 does not have ABS in the front, only rear. I have read that the ABS senser is mounted on the rear diff. I have not had ABS problems yet.

Last year I was chasing "Death Wobble" on my 97 and after replacing lots of front end componets (about $2,000 worth) I thought I had it licked. Then everytime I barely touched the brake pedal (at around 50 MPH) the truck would skake vilently side to side. I replaced the rotors and the wobble has been gone for a year now. The rotors were warped and causing the shaking. I used drilled/slotted rotors from NAPA. Search my user name for details of the fix and pics.

Ah ha!

Check the grease/ Lube in the front caliper slide bolts.

1 good rain storm will wash the lube out and cause the calipers to stick real bad.

That's why I invented a cool solution to keep most of the water out.

PM for details...

Also... .

I have metalic rear shoes and they actually get a coating of rust on them over night after driving in the rain...

I get a slight shudder when first applying the brakes the next day.

Cheers

Thanks for all the replies. Today the truck drove fine; no problems, but the temperature was above 20* all day. I don't think its death wobble, I've felt that before in my 98. I'll try to get the wheels off over Christmas and see what I can figure out.
