I have been reading this forum for quite sometime now, but only recently decided to join. I am anxiously awaiting delivery of a 2001. 5 QC 2500 with the HO motor. I had already budgeted for some "standard" mild mods (exhaust, etc. ), but recently I am having second thoughts. My primary concerns are to have a solid, long lasting, economical truck... (Not necessarily in that order. ) I had considered turbo timers, pre-lube systems, and other filtration systems with the genuine intent of making the truck last longer.

(deep breath)

With all of that said... Are there any "factory accepted" mods? Are certain modifications acceptable if they are dealer installed? What about cosmetic items like mudflaps, billet grills? I know I am asking alot of questions here, but I am getting a little nervous reading about all of your warranty related problems.

I can understand why you are asking these questions. But keep in mind there are thousands of these trucks out there that are going to work every day. Day in and day out. I have a truck that is two years old, nearly 100k on the odometer. It has been in for two small recall's. Not one warranty issue.
Some guys on this forum with legitimate complaints are frustrated, and can get very vocal. But I think if Dodge were building a bad truck they wouldn't be selling, don't you?
I have to chuckle when someone posts a complaint and includes statements like " its been doing this since day one". I think to my self, if it did this on day one why in the world did you take it home from the dealership!
Me? I just wade through the noisy complaining hoping to learn from others. But most of all, I enjoy learning ( both do's and don't do's ) when people stick to factual information and leave the emotional tyrades out of it.

Here, Here. All the complaining is a little discouraging, but like Ram Kowboysaid if it did it since day one, why did you take it home??? You never hear much from the guys with no problems.

The Original Turbo Diesel

This is the first time I've been over to this side of the website. I agree that there are probably some legitimate complaints and frustration. I just came back to DC, and this is the frist Cummins I've had and have to say that I'm really happy. I had a GMC diesel that didn't have a turbo. I clearly remember what lack of power was, and GMC/Chev/Ford are no better in their bodies and warranty issues. I'm glad I bought my "01. Grease Monkey, I don't know if there are any mods that are "approved". This seems to be an on going issue. I've added gages, and will be adding a 2 wheel drive low switch. I've thought about a VA, but know that is definitely a warranty issue. Gages and switch "shouldn't" cause me any problems.
Good luck. I know you'll enjoy your new truck.

I should have probably explained my concerns more clearly. If I were to leave the truck %100 stock I would not be concerned. However, I would like to add some after market items, and I am worried that these additions may void my factory warranty. I am aware of the magnussen-moss (sp?) act, but would prefer not make it an issue. Specifically, what sort of warranty issues have any of you encountered with items like exhaust, bypass oil filter systems, and prime locs?

grease monkey , the items you are thinking of should not affect your warranty one bit , except that those parts will not be warranted by dodge .

that being said , and it ALL DEPENDS ON YOUR DEALER , if you have a problem and there is even a remote chance that the aftermarket part breathed in the wrong direction , you may experience some trouble , but that still depends on the dealer ... good luck ... . hope i didn't tyrade to much #ad

Ram Kowboy I am one of those who has had a problem since driving it home. Check my posting on 01 engine whine. You have a point in what you say but with not knowing all the facts I wouldnt jump to conclusions. You say why did you drive it off the lot? This is my 3rd Dodge and I did not anticipate having any problems. Also, in getting the best trade in and price,I dealt with a dealership over the phone. All negotiations were over the phone and the paper signing was done through FedEx. The dealership is in Idaho and I live in Oregon. They did a locate to get the truck I wanted, had it delivered to the dealership, mailed the paperwork to me and I then drove 500 miles one way to pick it up the following weekend. The mileage was checked on my trade in and we drove home. That was when the howl was noticed. Who would have thought of having this problem after the good luck I had with the 2 other trucks. Yes,Dodge makes an excellent product. Try not to be so critical next time someone post of a problem since day one.
