I have 46,xxx Miles on my truck. I have a bad crankshaft sensor and maybe lift pump. I was told that the lift pump was covered by the engine warrenty, and I assumed that the sensor was too. When I went to drop my truck off at the dealer today, I was told that the engine warrenty ONLY covers the engine, not the electronics, etc. Is this true? What gives?

Needless to say, I walked (drove) out of the dealership and will do this myself if it's not covered. Just didn't want to spend the money on something that is covered.

Get out your warranty book and read it. I do believe the 5 year/100,000 mile warranty for the engine covers the lift pump not sure about the sensor, the dealer will give you the run around every time, they act like it their money they are spending on the warranty work.

Boy it seems as though every dealer has a problem trying to decide what is or is not covered, maybe after Dodge has been around for a while they will get it right.

But really you would think sensors would be covered under the Emissions Warranty I would check with another dealer.

Have them call DC if there is a question. If you are still not satisfied, you call DC. The # is in the warranty book. I will have my second lift pump put in under warranty at 79K. If I read the warranty manual right the emisions warranty is 80K and diffrent for a 3500 (GVW over 10,000). The 100K warranty covers engine, injector pump, and turbo. I can not imagine the crank sensor is not part of the engine warranty.

Who to call

I was just wondering if there is someone to call on this. I remember reading here somewhere (I'll do a search) that there is some department in Chrysler I can complain to (dealers don't care for it--affects their 5* record). I'm also thinking of calling the BBB.

Found what I was looking for. How can I contact a Local Zone Rep? It seems this is the person I need to contact.

I had an issue when I bought my truck. Sent a camplaint to this link and got a response right away. They even paid for a trip to cummins to dyno the beast.

Give it a try. Can't hurt

The Ph # is 1-800-992-1997. This is the Daimler Chrysler Customer Center. They should give you a straight answer. I would think that the crank sensor should be covered under the warranty as much as the ECM would. They both affect the engine operation.

Answer

I finally got an answer from DC on this question. Short answer: No, it's not covered.

The crankshaft position sensor and lift pump are not covered under the engine warranty. They are covered under the emissions warranty. I just found out how confusing the emissions warranty is! For heavy duty trucks the emissions warranty is 5yr/50K. Heavy duty is defined as: over 10K GVW (VIN 4th position is M) or HD gas or diesel engine (VIN 8th position is 5, C or W). Since I have a 2500 I don't meet the GVW and I don't have a HD diesel engine (8th position for my truck is a 6). I'm in NH so I am not cover by CA emission warranty (CA, MA, and VT are covered by CA emissions) which is for 7yr/70K.

Since the lift pump is covered under the emissions warranty I just thought I'd pass this on. I'm not sure what the weight rating for the 3500 is. If it is over 10K, it is covered under warranty.
