I was about 30 miles down the road Sunday when I noticed the Tac & Speedometer go to zero. I also heard a chime & something lit up to the left of the fuel gauge. All this happened in about 1 second. I just happened to be looking at the instrument panel. I didn't notice any hiccup in the power.

All instruments returned to normal within the second.

Does anyone have any idea what happened? And do you suppose that this Event was recorded in the computer so that the mechanic can find out what happened??

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Could be, try turning the key on and off three times, rapidly and watch the odometer. It will show any malfunction codes, which you can find in the sticky, in the FAQ list at top.

Intreesting. My '99 had this problem and there was a TSB out about the connector for the instrument cluster having a bad connection. Could they have the same problem in the 3rd gen? Nah,

My 01 did the same thing when the crankshaft position sensor was going out. I have no idea if our engines have such a creature??

Mine done that same thing bout a month ago, checked for a code and none was present, I just blew it off as a ECM fart!!!!

Mine did it one time about 12,000 miles ago when I hit a hard bump at 75. Never had a code and it's never done it again.

Toot, toot.

Mine did it and I think it was caused by bumping the key, the key in mine is very sensitive and if it moves slightly I get the chime and gauges going to zero. Try it the next time you are driving, just move the key a little. I do not have a heavy key ring but I think if one did it could cause problems.

It might have set a code, but it will be in the MIC (cluster) or the FCM (silver box in front of the power distribution center), not in the PCM.

I had something similar. My speedometer started bouncing all over the place. Sometimes it would be dead, sometimes it would bounce around while sitting still. I would also get random instrument lights. After taking it to a second dealer (the first dealer is a whole other story) the tech told me that it had a bad connector to the instrument cluster. He said he first cleaned it and re-seated the connector but could get the speedometer to act up again just by wiggling to connector. He then replaced the instrument cluster wiring harness and I have had any problems since. It did not trip any codes. The worst thing that it did was I left my truck running while unlocking my gate and the doors automatically locked. I don't know if the speedo jumping around did it or what, but needless to say I don't do that again. Yes, I had a key hidden that I unlocked the door with, but it was up under the truck and it was raining and I was a muddy mess by the time I retrieved it. Anyway, don't know if my problem was the same as yours but thought I'd throw my two cents worth in. Good luck.
