Hello Guys,

I havn't posted in a long time but now I have trouble. Here is the situation. Truck is a 99, 79K miles, no mods' at all. Has run perfectly for me for the last 6 years never a problem. Ran it this morning for a few errands. Parked in the driveway, went to restart, cranks, no fire. I have about 10lbs fuel pressure. Changed the fuel filter. Check engine light is on. Pulled codes. Have a P1693 and a 1689. I did a search on here with no real luck. It just died out of no where with no warning, odd running, etc. . I am ******. I am going to search crank position sensors and see what we get. Please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

David

Yes it is. And, I unplugged the connector to the IP looked fine, all greased up, plugged it back in. The engine started. I figured good to go. Went out for a drive. Less than a mile down the road it started to stumble and then quit. I started at the plug again, in and out a few times. Nothing. Called a tow truck. While they are on the way, it started again. It stumbled and if I really worked the throttle pedal it, it would run on and off, but made it home. It would idle, but power off and on. Now it won't start again. ANy thoughts as to the TPS? I am lost on this one.

Just out of the blue here.

You have enough fuel, verified the fuel gauge, verified the mileage since fill up; just inexpensive thought.

If it is the VP, how do you test it to make sure. There are no dealers locally that are capapble of diagnosing this, so I will do it. But I don't want to just start throwing parts at this thing.

BRY1216, thanks for the thoughts, but I have checked all of those things. I am also a big fan of trying the simple/less $$ money things first.

I am inclined to start with a crank sensor. After doing some searches, a lot of similiar symptons have been solved with this solution. But again, there has to be a way to diagnose/test this part as well. Thanks for everyones help so far.

Well, my '99 did almost the EXACT same thing to me a month ago.

Ran 100% perfect up until one day on the highway - whammo! just died like I shut it off.

Ran fine for another 2 or three weeks, then started stumbling again - pulled the codes and got the P1689 code.

It was my VP44.

I just put a new one in 2 weeks ago and the problem went away.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's almost surely what it is.

Thanks Shawn. From everything I have been reading it seems as though I think your right. Oh well, there goes $1100. So much for the watch I was bidding on at Ebay!! I think I am going to go with Performance Diesel for the new VP. They seem knowledgable and willing to help on install. I rebuild engines, and such so I am not intimidated by replacing it, just need to know the steps and some tips. Anyone want to offer any?? Thanks guys.

David;

There are a great set of step by step instructions to do the R&R here:

http://turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=156993&highlight=T50+torx

Now, given that you have a '99 also, there is an important item that you need to be aware of perhaps even before tearing it down.....

That is, the rear support bracket for the VP44 was awful for the '99-'01 and often times broke. I've been told several times, that if you get in there and find out it's broken, you MUST replace it, or your new pump will soon fail, as the pump is very heavy and requires rear support.

Now, Cummins released an upgraded version of this rear support bracket if you find yours is broken. I decided to change mine anyway, even if the original wasn't broken as preventative maintenance. This new bracket is actually a two-piece, and is significantly beefier than the original abortion that was used.

You can get the new upgraded bracket for your truck by going to Cummins. The part # you need is 3938707 . It is the full upgraded bracket kit, including bolts.

WARNING!: The upgraded bracket caused me a world of grief trying to install that thing. There are no assembly instructions with it, and the clearance of the bracket to the block is stupidly tight. Mine was actually too tight, and had to use a grinder to take 1/32" off the bracket edge to get it to fit. You will also need to remove your power steering pump to put attach the new bracket to the engine block.

I almost reached the point of putting the old one back in it was causing me so much grief (and anger!).

Hope that helps,

Shawn

no 0216 code

Guys, before I go thru the effort of replacing the IP, I have been doing some more reading and almost all say they have the 0216 code come up when it is time to do the VP44. I have not had that. Is it possible it is something else? I hate replacing parts without being sure it is the problem. ANy thoughts.

Man I hate to hear this. My 01 just did the same stumble,"misfire", this AM but continued running. Engine light came on. Checked codes, got only P1693. Code cleared and light went off after a few re starts. Has run fine ever since. I changed oil and fuel filters yesterday and figured maybe I knocked something loose. Checked all connections, continues running great, no codes. Anyone know for sure what 1693 means? Ive got a 1600 mile trip coming up this weekend, hate to loose the VP on the road!!!! Thanks for any advice, Jim G

well, this thread seems to be mocking my truck as well. it has had hard starts, but w/ no pattern or regularity. i got to where i was going, turned it off and it has stayed off. i thought it had been sucking air and lost its prime so while it was down i put on the vulcan kit and relocated the pump. my neighbor cracked the lines while i cranked and it started twice, but is dead again.

it seems like it's not getting any ignition. i was told to check the relays, but i also want to know more about checking the vp44. because once i have it towed somewhere i know they are going to parrot the ip is out. i don't want to spend 2500$ b/c they don't want to do any diagnostics.

i don't know about codes since i dont have a scanner, but when it happened this this spring it didn't have any thrown and the check engine light is not on either.

also, the thread listed above keeps kicking me out when i go to page two. is that the right link? what is pin #6 and #7? is that on the ip plug? can someone explain this better so i can read the manual and get more familiar?

thanks for the patience

0216 code-- when my vp died a month ago I didn't get this code. just the 1693 and nothing as far as fuel pressure at the injectors, I cracked 4 of 6 and only the fule left in the lines oozed out.

wish I had been at home and could have done it myself instead of paying $120 and hour at the *******. at least they washed my truck for me, and at least they could fix it and get me running , I am just cheap and don't like paying $480 for what i could have done myself.

EVERYTHING on the truck is original (apps, vp44, iat, map, crank/cam sensors). the valve covers have never even been off! should i try replacing the sensors first? will that help any? i was going to check the wiring to/from the grid heater relay since it seems like it's just not firing off.

i feel this is going to be painful before it's all over with.

No Warning

When my vp44 died at 18000 miles and everything stock, it did it with no warning whatsoever. Sitting at a red light idling it just died and would not fire even a little. No skipping, rough running or anything for a warning that there was trouble. Didn't know how to check codes then but dealer fixed it by replacing the vp44. I remember the engine light was on continuously too. When the hammer falls on these things my experience was that it's all over and it has to be replaced. LOL

Well on 7/13 after 165,000 trouble free miles, the good old VP-44 went out. I had pulled out onto rt 31 in Maryland and after shifting into 3rd and just died. :(

Truck has always been stock other then BHAF and Ripp's 4" and a Holley Blue on the rail in front of the tank. Just like so many truck was running great and not a miss or sign whatsoever. I was just going to get rid of the rig for a Common Rail 6spd, but I quess that will wait now. $1,100 ish seems to be about the cost of a new VP. If anyone knows of a good shop to do the install in Maryland please let me know. Cummins Northeast wants 600 in labor to do the job.

Eventhough the IP went out I still dont have complaints about my truck. I am just lucky it did not give out this past weekend towing to and from a race weekend!

Did it again

Well, against what I knew was true, the truck was running again and a freind suggested just trying to bleed each injector. Did that, went for a test ride. Everything fine, 1/2 mile from home and it is dead on the side of the road. Plenty of juice coming out of the filter, nothing at the injectors. Now I have to go tow it home with my wifes suburban. Guess I am ordering a pump on Monday. I am just worried that I won't be able to trust the truck from now on. I will keep everyone posted. Thanks for everyones comments and tips. They have been invaluable.
