Damaged Turbo and Maybe Engine

I passed an old (maybe early or mid-80's) Jeep Wagoneer. We were both getting onto a highway from an on-ramp. I passed him as I had better acceleration. This thing was spewing what appeared to be black diesel smoke.

Did Jeep (pre-DC) put a diesel in these things?

It was a Renault TD

I believe the first year AMC offered this option was 1985. It was a 4 cylinder, 2. 1L (126ci) turbo diesel made by Renault. It made 85HP @3250 RPM and 132 lb-ft of torque at 3000 RPM. The block and head were cast aluminum, and it used a Bosch injection system. compression was 21. 5:1. The last year offered was 1987. I have never seen one in real life...

If it was the 'cherokee' style wagoneer. . yep. . as rescue ram said above though ... not too many on the road. If it was the big 'grand wagoneer' I don;t believe they had a diesel option ever offered... except maybe overseas.
